Greek tax officials on strike over salary cuts (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greek tax officials walked off the job Thursday at the start of a 48-hour strike to protest salary cuts and other austerity measures, as the government struggles to meet revenue targets demanded by the country's international creditors.

Tax offices shut down for the last two working days of the year, prompting hundreds of Greeks on Wednesday to rush to settle last-minute issues before the strike. Many handed over their car license plates, preferring to keep their vehicles off the road rather than paying an increased tax.

The Athens Chamber of Small Industries said it sent a letter to the country's finance minister, Evangelos Venizelos, urging a change in the higher road tax and arguing it was clear the government would be unable to collect the euro1.2 billion ($1.55 billion) it hoped for from the levy.

The chamber said there had been a 30 percent increase in the number of people turning in their vehicle registration plates compared to previous years. That would lead to decreased road tax revenues and hurt the economy through a fall in the consumption of fuel, vehicle spare parts and spending on car maintenance and insurance, it said.

The increase in cars being kept off the road "is a characteristic example of the failure of the implemented policy, the core of which is the achievement of fiscal targets through the constant burdening with taxes and levies of Greek society which is already at its economic limit," the chamber said in a statement.

Greece has been surviving since May 2010 on multibillion euro rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund after years of government overspending left it with an unsustainable public debt.

In return for the euro110 billion ($144 billion) bailout, the previous Socialist government imposed harsh austerity measures, increasing taxes and retirement ages, cutting pensions and salaries, and suspending tens of thousands of civil servants on reduced pay.

"As a result of the austerity measures putting some tax officers on reduced pay, we have 5,500 fewer tax office jobs," said tax officers' union head Charalambos Nikolakopoulos.

Tax evasion has been rampant in Greece, despite repeated efforts to crack down on the practice.

The strike comes a day after the sudden resignation of two prosecutors heading the judicial task force charged with fighting tax evasion. The two, Grigoris Peponis and Spiros Mouzakitis, claimed they were being sidelined and implied government interference in their work.

They said the government was "attempting to replace and get rid of" them with a new draft law that would appoint a high court prosecutor in their stead. The finance and justice ministries said the plan aimed to improve the task force's functioning.

The main Supreme Court prosecutor ordered an investigation Thursday into why the two resigned and their allegations of interference, while Prime Minister Lucas Papademos met with top judicial officials.

Papademos, who was appointed to head an interim coalition government in November after a political crisis forced his predecessor to resign, "underlined the need to complete as quickly as possible the investigation that has begun," a statement from his office said.

The repeated rounds of austerity measures have left the country struggling through a deep recession, with the economy projected to contract for a fourth year in 2012. It quickly became clear that the initial bailout would not be enough to prevent Greece from a potentially catastrophic default, and European leaders agreed in late October on a second, euro130 billion bailout for the country.

The new package includes provisions for private creditors to write off 50 percent of the value of Greek bonds they hold, potentially cutting Greece's overall debt by euro100 billion. But the details of this remain to be worked out, and the country is currently involved in tough negotiations.

If the debt writedown goes through and Greece implements all it has pledged to in the way of austerity measures and privatizations, the country is expected to reduce its debt to 120 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, from 161 percent of GDP this year.

Could Romney 'train' be derailed by Gingrich? Perry? Someone new?

The word 'inevitable' is getting tossed around these days when it comes to Mitt Romney and the GOP nomination. But Newt Gingrich remains a real rival, and it's even still possible for a newcomer to enter the contest.

The scenario looks increasingly plausible: Republican voters will ultimately hand their party's presidential nomination to Mitt Romney, even though many of them aren't excited about doing so.

But if the word "inevitable" is getting used a fair amount by political analysts these days, the nomination is hardly a sure thing for the former governor of Massachusetts.

His big assets are that his campaign is well organized, he has had no major missteps, and his rivals have foibles or flaws in the eyes of Republican voters.?So it's entirely possible that the train called "Mitt for president in 2012," which essentially left the station after his 2008 candidacy ended, will roll steadily to the nomination.

?The dynamics couldn?t be better for us,? a senior Romney strategist told New York Magazine. ?I don?t see any scenario where we?re not the nominee.?

But in a campaign that has been volatile for several months, calling the race over before voting begins may be premature.?

Another scenario, for example, includes a protracted "Newt versus Mitt" battle that pits Mr. Romney against former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is now Romney's main rival in polls.?

Another is that one or more candidates who are now further behind catch some momentum in Iowa or New Hampshire, and voters take a second look. That's what Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, and Michele Bachmann are hoping. If things get really complicated, the result could be a "brokered convention" in which no candidates has amassed the needed support before GOP delegates arrive to formally select the nominee.

A third scenario, conceivable if Romney looks vulnerable coming out of Iowa and New Hampshire, is that a new candidate enters the race in time to compete in later primaries. Here again, the outcome could then be drawn-out suspense in the primaries and at the convention.

Here's what one prominent poll shows now.

According to Gallup, Mr. Gingrich is ahead of Romney among registered Republicans nationwide, but just barely. Support for the former House speaker surged last month after the candidacy of businessman Herman Cain collapsed, but over the past three weeks has ebbed to 26 percent.

Some 23 percent of GOP voters say they'd go with Romney, 12 percent with Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, 8 percent with Texas Governor Perry, 6 percent with Representative Bachmann of Minnesota, 3 percent with former Senator Santorum of Pennsylvania, and 1 percent with former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.

The idea of a late-entry candidate is surely a wild card, but it's been getting some buzz lately.?In a new issue of The Weekly Standard, conservative commentator William Kristol makes a direct appeal to potential candidates now on the sidelines.

Looking for partners for interesting role plays

Hey there,

I'm Akira and I've been role playing for a little more two years now. I'm looking for a few people to start role playing with. I'm usually good at coming up with ideas but like having someone to bump those ideas off of and forming a greater role play with; Like a snowball. :D I'm pretty laid back, at least I like to think so, but I like planning so everyone is on the same page. I'm a little shy so I love it when people speak their minds. :3
I usually write four paragraphs and up. I've had up to eight characters before but prefer around four. I certainly don't mind groups, in fact, I really like them since that means even more people to throw ideas in and make it unique. I usually have male characters but may throw a female in there time to time. I'm fine with pretty much any gender/type relationship.
I am a high school student, currently on break, so there is a good chunk of the day I can't reply but will once I get home. Also, my cat likes to try to type. ^.^;

Role plays I'm interested in

Asylum - about to have one going but willing to start another
Horror - gore, gore, death, torture, gore. X3
Fantasy - Modern, Dark, Medieval, etc
Sci-fi - Like 'Mass Effect' and such
    Romance
    Realism
    Music
    Mythological
    Dante's Inferno
MMORPG based - taking part in both 'real life' and in the game.
Fandoms - There is a lot so just ask :3

There is a lot more I'd be willing to do but those are just my top few. If you have any ideas and want to throw them my way feel free. I'm open to most ideas.

Here's an idea I had:

Two males in their early twenties enter the life of prostitution. After a few years of working, one gets tired, numbs, and sick of the lifestyle. Something snaps in him and he begins killing females within a certain age group.

    1. The other male could go along with it and help him in murdering many women

    2. It could be unknown to the other male and they remain friends until he finds out

    3. The other male could find out early on and try to get him to stop

Canadian coach Hay secretive about his starting goaltender for tournament opener

EDMONTON - It would be more comforting for Canada's fans if it was obvious who their starting goaltender is for the first game of the 2012 world junior hockey championship.

But it isn't obvious.

Since a 5-3 pre-tournament loss to Sweden on Friday, there's been a question mark hanging over the host country's goaltending situation. Canada opens the tournament Monday against Finland.

Head coach Don Hay said prior to the team's practice Sunday he'd made his choice, but he didn't reveal it to reporters.

Mark Visentin and Scott Wedgewood practised without knowing, although Hay planned to inform his goalies after a team meeting later which one would get the coveted start in the tournament opener.

"I feel good about which guy I'm going to pick," Hay declared. "I know right now who it's going to be and I'll let them know later."

Hay has maintained since selection camp earlier this month that Visentin is his No. 1 goalie because of Visentin's experience playing in the 2011 tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.

But after Visentin gave up four goals on 17 shots and Wedgewood stopped all 10 shots he faced before the Swedes scored an empty-net goal, questions arose over which goalie was the most ready for the tournament.

Hay did say he plans to play both goalies in the tournament. That's not unusual.

The backup often gets a game in the preliminary round against the weaker country promoted from the second-tier world championship, which would be Thursday's game against Denmark.

"Both goalies feel, at least I feel that way right now, is that both goalies feel there's confidence coming from me to them," Hay said. "No matter who we play, no matter what time of the game it is, or against whoever, I think the goalies should have a lot of confidence."

The U.S. meets Denmark in the later Pool A game in Edmonton. Latvia and Sweden open Pool B games in Calgary on Monday afternoon, followed by defending champion Russia versus Switzerland at night.

The top team in each pool earns byes to the semifinals. The second and third seeds cross over to meet in the quarter-finals.

Canada has won a medal in this tournament 13 straight years, including five gold from 2005 to 2009, and has played in the final every year for the last decade. Canada took silver the last two years.

Securing the bye to the semifinals provides rest and an extra day of preparation to the countries who earn them, but in recent tournaments, the bye hasn't been that much of an advantage.

Three of the last four winners have come through a quarter-final ? Canada in 2008, the U.S. in 2010 and Russia in 2011.

Canada opens against the Finns after beating them 3-1 in an exhibition game Dec. 19. Finland played hard in that game despite having just recently arrived in Canada.

"We were in that game," Finnish coach Raimo Helminen said. "I don't know if we can be better but I hope so (that) we can compete against the big favourite."

Helminen, too, was secretive on the subject of his starting goalie. Chris Gibson, who plays for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Chicoutimi Sagueneens, was outstanding his two periods of the exhibition game against Canada.

Sam Aittokallio played the last period and the Colorado Avalanche prospect has the experience of playing one game in the tournament in Buffalo.

The Finns last won this tournament in 1998 and are looking for a bounce-back year after finishing sixth in Buffalo. They have six returning players, as well as a player who is considered the best one outside the NHL this season in Mikael Granlund.

The first-round pick (ninth overall) of the Minnesota Wild is a player Canada must pay attention to, says Hay.

"The Granlund line is a very talented line," Hay said. "They're very explosive and they're the key I feel to their team and we have to make sure we limit their offensive opportunities."

Canada went 2-1 in pre-tournament play. Visentin of the Niagara IceDogs made 22 saves in the exhibition games versus the Finns. The first-round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes is more conservative in his movements in net than the acrobatic Wedgewood.

Visentin was handed the starting job for the medal round in Buffalo and backstopped Canada to wins in the quarter-final and semifinal. Canada was leading 3-0 heading into the third period of the gold-medal game, but Russia scored five unanswered goals on Visentin to take the title.

He's never shirked from addressing his role in the collapse. The maturity and experience he gained through that experience is considered valuable to Canada's chances in this tournament.

"My mentality is the same as the team's," Visentin said Sunday. "We want to get better each and every day and once the tournament starts we need to bring our 'A' game every day so that's what I'm going to do."

Wedgwood, who plays for the Plymouth Whalers, stopped 24 of 25 shots in Canada's 7-1 victory over Switzerland on Thursday. The third-round pick of the New Jersey Devils was a standout in selection camp.

"The coaches are going to make a decision they feel comfortable with and as a goalie you've got to deal with it," Wedgewood said. "When you get your opportunity, take it."

The Canadian team spent Christmas Eve at the home of Edmonton Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe and then received Christmas gifts from Hockey Canada back at their hotel.

"The last week has been fun, we worked on a lot, I think we got a lot better and we became closer as a team, but the tournament is finally here and the atmosphere is going to be great," Canadian captain Jaden Schwartz said. "Finland is going to be a first tough contest for us so we're real excited."

Two Adults And Two Kids In A Deluxe Room Or Suite At Azul Fives Hotel In Mexico

The name ?Riviera Maya? is slightly deceptive: it derives from the modern connotation of the word ?riviera,? which can refer to almost any popular tourist coastline. The title has little to do with the Spanish translation of ?riviera,? as no freshwater rivers actually flow above ground through the area?s tropical jungles. Below sea level, however, lay thousands of cenotes?collapsed limestone caves that feature a network of freshwater rivers and underground lakes. The cenotes are a natural playground for scuba divers and snorkelers, as is the nearby Great Mayan Reef?one of the longest barrier reefs in the world. The luxurious Azul Fives Hotel resides between a natural cenote and the Caribbean Sea, as well as just 10 minutes from the bustling nightlife of Playa del Carmen.

Outdoor pools overlook the sea, and swim-up bars serve up tropical cocktails along the hotel?s palm-fringed grounds, a haven for relaxation. During a holistic couples massage at the 15,000-square-foot Vassa Spa, vacationers can soothe sore muscles after a day spent scuba diving or arm-wrestling octopi. Balmy breezes waft in from a private terrace or balcony within the posh guest rooms, where ivory-flecked d?cor nods to the picturesque seascape.

For a romantic dinner, guests can settle into gauzy beachside cabanas with a bottle of wine. The hotel also caters to families with its Azulitos Kid?s Club?a whimsical playroom and gym filled with Fisher-Price toys, a trampoline, and hands-on arts and crafts.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico: Popular White-Sand Beaches and Energetic Nightlife

Situated on Mexico?s southeastern tip just below Cancun are Playa del Carmen?s white-sand beaches, which stretch along the Caribbean Sea. Once part of a quiet fishing town, the beaches now welcome thousands of tourists year-round, with average temperatures hovering near 80 degrees. Crystal-clear waters make it easy for scuba divers and snorkelers of all levels to take the plunge into underground cenotes or the Great Mayan Reef, which is a hangout for turtles, lobsters, and whale sharks. Playa del Carmen?s downtown buzzes with restaurants that serve a variety of ethnic cuisines, and upscale retail stores stay open late along 5th Avenue. Street dancers move to the upbeat rhythm of live music and anyone nearby operating a jackhammer.

If you caught our release of Distro for Android tablets, you know we're in the mood for giving. In keeping with that sentiment, issue 19 ushers in two new weekly (and exclusive) features: "Recommended Reading," a guide to the best writing happening outside of our fine publication(s), and "Q&A," our take on the Proust questionnaire, answered this week by Engadget founder Peter Rojas. Of course no issue of Distro would be complete without a generous collection of reviews, and this one's packed full: Zach Honig takes a ride on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, Richard Lai covers Meizu's MX, Dana Wollman puts Samsung's Series 7 Slate PC through its paces, Tim Stevens tackles the Motorola Xyboard 8.2 and last, but most definitely not least, we examine Verizon's LTE Galaxy Nexus. It may not be your own private Watson, but it might just give you something to do between swigs of eggnog. So hit the appropriate download link and enjoy.

J.J. Abrams Teases 'Amazing' 'Star Trek' Sequel

But director wouldn't give up too many details about the film due May 2013.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

When it comes to getting the gory details about the "Star Trek" sequel, J.J. Abrams is a master of a few words and not revealing anything too juicy. Nevertheless, when MTV News encountered the writer/director/producer at the premiere of "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" recently, we came armed with questions, the first of which was when we'll find out whether Khan will be in the picture.

"It's a little early to be talking about 'Star Trek,' but I will say that they wrote — the three writers, Damon [Lindelof], Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] — they wrote the most amazing script, and I'm thrilled to get a chance to direct it," he said. "It's totally mine to screw up, so if you don't like it, it's completely on me. Our sets are almost done, so we're going to go back and start shooting next month."

Abrams, being the perfectionist that he is, went on to say that he hopes to improve upon a few things in the first film, but didn't mention what those fixes or improvements may be.

"I'm sure, like many people, you see what you do and you go, 'I really could have done that one better, I should have done that, that was a mistake, more of this, less of that.' You always do that," he said. "I'm hoping that as we do the next one, all the mistakes that I've made that I've hopefully learned from, I can bring to this one and hope make it better."

A master of no information, Abrams is. We did manage to get him to talk about whether "Trek 2" will be shot in 3-D and/or IMAX, however.

"We're shooting on film, 2-D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the 'Harry Potter' movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good.

"We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I'm a huge fan," he added.

And finally, because we decided to go for the goods while we had him, we asked Abrams for an update on the long-discussed "Cloverfield" sequel. "I wish I could give you an update," he said. "We would love to do it if there was an idea that is worth your time. We're playing with some ideas, but we haven't found the one that you go, 'That's the reason to do it.' "

Check out everything we've got on "Star Trek 2."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jimmy Rollins is bringing his swagger back to the Phillies. Three people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that Rollins has agreed to a 3-year, $33 million contract with Philadelphia. The deal includes a vesting option for a fourth year.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the agreement is pending a physical.

"Gotta deal with me for 3 (4) more years!" Rollins wrote on Twitter. He also thanked former Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins, who tweeted congratulations to Rollins and the Phillies.

Rollins is a three-time All-Star shortstop and the 2007 NL MVP. He has spent his entire career with the Phillies after being selected in the second round of the 1996 amateur draft, and was a free agent for the first time.

Rollins, who turned 33 last month, sought at least a five-year deal. The Phillies didn't want to go that long, and were able to reach an agreement after the market for Rollins lessened.

From the start, Rollins said he wanted to stay in Philadelphia. He has been the heart and soul of a team that has won five consecutive NL East titles and the 2008 World Series. Rollins is undeniably the team leader, a charismatic personality who brings a special confidence to the clubhouse.

Rollins was the guy who boldly proclaimed the Phillies were the team to beat in the division before the 2007 season, even though Philadelphia hadn't won anything in 14 years. He backed that up by having an MVP year, and leading the Phillies to their first postseason appearance since 1993.

Rollins hasn't come close to matching the numbers he put up in 2007 ? .296 average, 30 homers, 94 RBIs, 20 triples, 41 steals. But he remains one of the best defensive players at his position, and is still an offensive threat atop the lineup.

He hit .268 with 16 homers, 63 RBIs and 30 steals this year. He has been plagued by leg injuries in three of the last four years, and played in a career-low 88 games in 2010. He started 135 this year.

Re-signing Rollins had been a top priority for the Phillies. Their biggest move of the offseason was giving former Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon a $50 million, four-year contract.

Comet survives fiery plunge through sun

A newfound comet defied long odds Thursday, surviving a suicidal dive through the sun's hellishly hot atmosphere, according to NASA scientists.

Comet Lovejoy plunged through the sun's corona at about 7 p.m. ET, coming within 87,000 miles of our star's surface. Temperatures in the corona can reach 2 million degrees Fahrenheit, so most researchers expected the icy wanderer to be completely destroyed.

But Lovejoy proved to be made of tough stuff. A video taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft, or SDO, showed the icy object emerging from behind the sun and zipping back off into space.

"Breaking News! Lovejoy lives! The comet Lovejoy has survived its journey around the sun to reemerge on the other side," SDO researchers tweeted.

SDO is one of many instruments that scientists ? eager to record and study the comet's presumed demise ? trained on Lovejoy as it streaked toward the sun.

"We have here an exceptionally rare opportunity to observe the complete vaporization of a relatively large comet, and we have approximately 18 instruments on five different satellites that are trying to do just that," Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, wrote on the Sungrazing Comets website before Lovejoy's closest solar approach.

Battams runs the website, which is devoted to comets discovered by two different spacecraft: NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), which is operated jointly by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). [Death of a Comet: Photos of Sungrazing Comet Lovejoy]

Preparing for the end
Lovejoy has a core about 660 feet wide. It belongs to a class of comets known as Kreutz sungrazers, whose orbits bring them very close to the sun.

All Kreutz sungrazers are thought to be the remnants of a single giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They're named after the 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first showed that such comets are related.

Comets plunge into the sun on a regular basis, but they rarely give much advance notice of their suicidal intentions. That's why scientists were so excited about Lovejoy. Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered the icy wanderer on Nov. 27, giving researchers plenty of time to map out their observation campaign.

And that campaign has been intense, involving five different spacecraft. In addition to SDO, SOHO and STEREO, scientists planned to use Japan's Hinode satellite and ESA's Proba spacecraft to track Lovejoy's movements, Battams wrote.

NASA also created a website providing updates about the comet's pass through the corona, as well as images of the event beamed down by SDO. It can be found here: http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/lovejoy.php

For his part, Terry Lovejoy said he was happy to have made a contribution, and he marveled a bit at all the attention the comet has been getting.

"It's been tremendous," Lovejoy told Space.com. "Apparently it's all over Facebook, and I don't use Facebook. But there's a lot of interest. I think a lot of people like the name ? the Lovejoy name seems to strike a chord with people."

A dramatic escape
Lovejoy is quite large for a sungrazing comet, and experts expected it to die an impressive death. The website Spaceweather.com, for example, predicted Lovejoy would blaze as brightly as Jupiter or Venus in the sky as it neared the sun.

Battams also expected a good show, saying the comet might even be visible from the ground around sunset today in the Northern Hemisphere.?

"I do think that it will put on a spectacular show for us and will be the brightest Kreutz-group comet that SOHO has ever observed," Battams wrote last week.

Though the early returns are just starting to come in, those forecasts appear to be on the money. Observations from various spacecraft do indeed show Lovejoy flaring up significantly as it neared our star.

Researchers will keep analyzing the images to better understand the comet's daring solar approach. And now skywatchers apparently have another shot to catch a glimpse of the resilient Lovejoy on Friday morning.

For observers in North America, the comet will rise approximately 5 to 10 minutes before dawn and will be situated to the upper right of the sun. If Lovejoy is still shining at least as brightly as Venus, it may be visible, experts say.?

You could also try to spot Lovejoy after the sun comes up, if you're exceedingly careful. Block the rising sun behind a distant building and focus on the part of the sky 3 to 4 degrees above and to the right of the sun (your clenched fist held at arm's length is equal to roughly 10 degrees).

CAUTION: Never point binoculars or a telescope at or near the sun, and never look directly at the sun with the naked eye. Serious eye damage can result.

And don't get your hopes up, either. The comet may well be too faint to see, experts say.

Note: If you take any good pictures of Comet Lovejoy and would like them to be considered for a future story or image gallery, contact Space.com managing editor Tariq Malik at tmalik@space.com.

HBT: Are Cardinals in play for Fielder?

After Albert Pujols signed with the Angels, the assumption was that the Cardinals would move Lance Berkman to first base and potentially make a play for free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran. However, in a series of tweets this morning, Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch indicates that any such plan isn?t necessarily set in stone.

source:

We?ve heard some conflicting reports this week about whether the Cubs are actually a legitimate suitor for Fielder. The Blue Jays have been mentioned, but we can probably rule them out if they land Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish. The Mariners and Orioles are also believed to be in the mix, but it?s not known whether either club would be willing to give him the massive long-term contract he desires. Fielder doesn?t turn 28 until May, so it?s not inconceivable that he could take a shorter deal and test free agency again in a couple of years, but it?s also possible that his agent Scott Boras is just trying to get more teams involved in the conversation.

Fallout from FAMU: Ga. high schools suspend bands (AP)

ATLANTA ? The fallout from the death of a Florida A&M University drum major broadened Wednesday to nearly two dozen high schools in Georgia, where marching band activities were suspended over concerns of "inappropriate physical activity" between band mates.

A metro Atlanta school district began investigating after Robert Champion died Nov. 19. The Southwest DeKalb High graduate was found unresponsive on a bus parked in front of an Orlando hotel after a university football game, and authorities said his death involved hazing.

Another Florida A&M student, Bria Shante Hunter, who also attended Southwest DeKalb, told police she was severely beaten in a hazing ritual about three weeks before Champion's death.

Hunter, a freshman and clarinet player, said she was repeatedly hit in her legs by members of the "Red Dawg Order," a band club for Georgia natives. Authorities have said Champion was hazed, but have not described how.

Three band members were arrested in Hunter's case and charged with hazing. Two were also charged with battery.

Meanwhile, Florida authorities looking into Champion's death opened a new investigation after they uncovered possible employee fraud and misconduct at the university, according to documents released Wednesday.

The separate investigation was triggered by information investigators discovered regarding the finances of the Marching 100, according to a person in Gov. Rick Scott's administration. He asked for anonymity because he was not publicly authorized to discuss the matter.

In Georgia, Walter Woods, spokesman for the DeKalb County school district, said they were investigating marching bands at the district's 21 high schools after two problems over the summer. He declined to say whether the incidences involved hazing and said the students involved were not injured.

"Our interest is in protecting students, the safety of the students," said Woods. "We have notified schools to be vigilant of our existing policy, which is zero tolerance for harassment of any kind."

The bands' busy season ended last week with the conclusion of football season, but the Atlanta-area bands will still be able to perform in the Martin Luther King Day parade in Stone Mountain in January, Woods said. No marching bands are scheduled to perform in a football bowl game.

Decatur resident Keith Sailor, who is the president of the marching band booster club at Southwest DeKalb High School, said his son, a sophomore, has never had any problems with hazing.

"I'm pretty comfortable with him participating in the band," he said, declining further comment.

Experts say hazing has been found in students as young as 12, particularly when it involves a team activity like sports or band. Richard Sigal, a retired New Jersey sociology professor and expert on hazing, said schools need to examine whether it is happening.

"I think anytime you get a group of young people together, at some point, a tradition becomes established and that's what perpetuates hazing," Sigal said. "It's up to coaches, it's up to the principals, it's up to the band leaders to stop it."

In Florida, the state law enforcement agency sent letters to the head of the FAMU board and the head of the state university system, but they did not detail the potential fraud or misconduct, saying only that it involves school employees as well as "persons associated" with the university.

The school's president, James Ammons was hired more than four years ago as part of an effort to clear up past problems at the university. State audits found that some financial records could not be verified and there was questionable contracting. The college also could not account for millions of dollars in inventory.

Last week, the school's board of trustees publicly reprimanded Ammons after a contentious debate on whether he should have been placed on leave.

Solomon Badger, chairman of the FAMU board, said the university would cooperate with the new investigation.

"I didn't know anything about the fraud and I still don't," Badger said.

University officials have suspended the famed Marching 100 band from performances until the investigation into Champion's death is completed.

Obama pays tribute to US troops in speech marking end of Iraq conflict he had opposed

Barack Obama marked the impending withdrawal of the last American soldiers from Iraq not as mission accomplished, but as "a final march toward home".

The US President yesterday sought to pronounce a symbolic end to a war that has cost the lives of more than 100,000 Iraqis and nearly 4,500 Americans since it began almost nine years ago.

Speaking ahead of a 31 December deadline for the withdrawal of all US combat troops from Iraq, Mr Obama applauded the "extraordinary achievement" of service members. "The war in Iraq will soon belong to history, and your service belongs to the ages," he told soldiers in a speech delivered at Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina.

Mr Obama, appearing with his wife. Michelle, recalled the start of the war, a time when he was an Illinois state senator in opposition to the invasion, and many of the warriors before him were in grade school. "We knew this day would come. We have known it for some time now," he said. "But still, there is something profound about the end of a war that has lasted so long."

It was the President's first visit to Fort Bragg, home to Army Special Operations, the 18th Airborne Corps and the 82nd Airborne, among others. Special Forces troops from Fort Bragg were among the first soldiers in Iraq during the 2003 invasion and its paratroopers helped lead the 2007 troop increase.

Mr Obama has pledged the US will continue civilian assistance for Iraq as it faces an uncertain future in a volatile region of the world. Despite a drop in violence since its peak in the sectarian conflicts of 2006 and 2007, extreme violence and sporadic attacks are still common in Iraq. This was illustrated as recently as 5 December, when at least 20 people were killed in three bomb blasts about 50 miles south of Baghdad. Yesterday, four bombs went off across the country, killing three people.

In his speech, Mr Obama conceded that Iraq "is not a perfect place". But, he added,"We are leaving behind a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people.

"We are building a new partnership between our nations. Because of you, we are ending these wars in a way that will make America stronger and the world more secure," he told the assembled troops.
