Rock of Ages Set Visit Report

Rock-of-Ages-movie-image-logo-slice

Tom Cruise is standing in the center of the stage.? He?s shirtless, wearing black jeans with long black hair and painted black nails.? His back has a huge bird like tattoo with longs wings that stretch from shoulder to shoulder.? Along his midsection and sides, he?s got a number of smaller tattoos.? In front of him are 1,500 screaming fans.? As the camera zooms in closer to the stage, the music starts and the crowd erupts in to cheers.? All of a sudden, I realize he?s singing ?Pour Some Sugar on Me? by Def Leppard, and he?s moving around the stage like he?s been there for years.? In only a few moments, I believe Tom Cruise is a rock star, and I?m completely sold on director Adam Shankman?s Rock of Ages.

Let me back up a second.

As I type these words, it?s August 13, 2011 and I spent last night on? Los Angeles? Sunset Strip in 1987.? However, since that?s filming on the real strip and dressing it up in 1987 culture would be beyond expensive and impractical for a huge movie, Warner Bros. recreated the strip on a few streets in Miami.? And based on what I got to see and hear last night, Rock of Ages looks like it?s absolutely captured the 80s in a really fun way.? Hit the jump for so much more.

Before going any further, if you haven?t seen the recent trailer, I?d watch that first:

Video Blog

Shortly after getting back to the hotel last night, I recorded a video blog about the set visit with Amy from Myspace and Jamie from IAmRogue.? We talked about the amazing sets, the interviews, what we thought, how excited Adam Shankman was, and so much more.? All three of us were very impressed when we left the set.? Further down is more.

tom-cruise-Rock-of-Ages-movie-image20 Things to Know About Rock of Ages

-? Rock of Ages takes place in 1987

- The movie isn?t making fun of the era.? They?re playing it straight.

- They filmed in Florida.

- Shankman said he wanted to make a musical that straight men would want to see.

- Shankman said the Rock of Ages budget was the same budget as Hairspray. He had to cut 40 million to get it made.

russell-brand-Rock-of-Ages-movie-image- Alec Baldwin is the reason Rock of Ages got in front of cameras.? Apparently, Baldwin is known as ?Dr. No? because he always says no to everything.? When he said yes to the project, WB told Shankman to make it work, and then Shankman rushed to get it in front of the cameras.

- The Sunset Strip set they built in Miami was amazing.? It was truly like being transported back in time.? When though it looks like it must have taken four months to bring it to life, we learned it only took half that time.

- It was a huge undertaking to get all the legal clearances for the movie. Anything that couldn?t get cleared, the production would build something similar but different enough so they could use it. An example is the Marlboro Man: His billboard used to be on the strip.? However you can?t advertise cigarettes in a movie, so they built a billboard featuring a guy that looks like him, but he?s advertising being a cowboy or something like that.

julianne-hough-Rock-of-Ages-movie-image- There are 23 songs in the movie, a few of them are originals, and some are medleys of two songs mixed together.? Desmond Child, who wrote many of the big songs of the 80?s, wrote or co-wrote the original songs.

- There are three primary locations in the movie: the Sunset Strip, The Bourbon Room and the Venus Club.

- They have over 70 ?picture cars.?, i.e. era-appropriate cars being used in the movie.

- All the singers in the movie are using their own voices.? Even Tom Cruise.

- On the vintage bus they have old movie banner ads.? One side of the bus had The Lost Boys while the other had Little Shop of Horrors.

julianne-hough-image-Rock-of-Ages- They?re shooting using digital cameras, specifically the ARRI Alexa.? Shankman told us that while it was a learning curve for everyone, he?s been blown away by the ability of the camera to film at night with almost no light.

- Everything on the Strip has been moved closer together.? The production made a list of every bar, nightclub, and real world location they wanted to use, and then put them next to one another.? It?s like they took all the commercial buildings and restaurants off the strip, and what was left is the Rock of Ages strip.? It worked; the set was amazing, and it captured the essence of the strip.

- The movie and the stage musical are different.? Shankman decided to focus on the lead character rather than a side character, and instead of a club being sold, the movie is about censorship, which was a real issue back in the 80?s with Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center.

tom-cruise-Rock-of-Ages-image- Tom Cruise surprised everyone with the way he was able to learn his choreography, and also with how hard he worked.? Shankman said he?s spend hours answering Cruise?s questions, and he was like a sponge always trying to learn.? Also, Cruise never gets tired and never slows down.

- Most of the main cast did 5 weeks of intense rehearsals before shooting began.? They called it ?Rock Star College?. They did vocal, dance and guitar work.

- Shankman isn?t afraid to show visiting journalists unfinished footage in his trailer.? After doing an extremely honest interview, he led us into his trailer and showed us Tom Cruise singing ?Pour Some Sugar on Me? and another sequence with Mary J. Blige inside the Venus Club.? Both sequences looked great, and even the unfinished Cruise sequence caused normally-jaded journalists to applause.? Trust me, you won?t believe how Cruise looks and sounds in Rock of Ages.? After seeing the footage, I wanted to watch the entire movie then and there.

rock-of-ages-julianne-hough-diego-boneta- When we showed up on set last night, I wasn?t sure what we?d see.? Would the production have built a theater, or converted a music venue into what they needed?? Whatever I thought beforehand, the actual set was infinitely better.

- One of my favorite parts of the set was the Tower Records store.? Until a few years ago when it went out of business, the Tower Records on the Strip was as much a part of Los Angeles as palm trees and the Coffee Bean.? Getting to see the store come back to life, with vintage album covers by Kiss, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Cinderella, and many others on the outside of the building, was a lot of fun.? Also, while the store wasn?t real on the inside, the front door was open and they had a basic setup that would look real for the camera.? It was great to see albums and other vintage posters when the doors were open between takes.

- Of course the Tower Records wasn?t the only store on the set, and the production also built The Comedy Store, Guitar Center, The Body Shop, Frederick?s of Hollywood, Trashy Lingerie, Carney?s, the Rainbow Room, Filthy McNasty?s, and so many other places.? In addition, with the movie taking place in ?87, they made sure to include another famous Angeleno: Angelyne (read about her here).? The production actually built a massive billboard of the busty blond, and she overlooks the strip like she did back in the ?80?s.? It?s the little touches like this that demonstrated how much love and care went into bringing the past to life.

rock-of-ages-alec-baldwin-russell-brand-julianne-hough- I think anyone who ever walked the Strip in the 80?s is going to love Rock of Ages and experience some serious nostalgia.

- I really can?t say enough about the footage I saw of Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx.? Trust me, it?s going to blow you away.

- In director Adam Shankman?s Rock of Ages, Cruise plays the biggest rock star on the planet and he?s about to start playing his farewell show with his band Arsenal before he does a solo project.

Final Thoughts

As you saw in the video blog, I?ve got a lot of enthusiasm for Rock of Ages.? While I knew very little about the movie before the set visit, everything I saw and learned tells me this musical is going to be a big hit for Warner Bros. next year.? It?s got an amazing cast and a soundtrack that I can?t wait to hear.? I never thought I?d have written that last sentence before visiting the set.? Wait until you see Cruise sing ?Pour Some Sugar on Me?.? You?ll be impressed.

For more on Rock of Ages, here?s my on set interviews with the cast and over twenty behind-the-scenes pictures I took while walking around set:

US expels Syria diplomat over Houla massacre

A Syrian governmental crackdown is escalating prompting UN peace broker Kofi Annan to speak out and longtime Syrian ally Russia to criticize the regime. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com and NBC News

Updated at 10:25 a.m. ET: The United States and a string of other nations expelled Syrian diplomats Tuesday, in?response to a United Nations announcement that most of the 108 victims of the Houla violence had been executed.

The State Department said it had?decided to expel Charge d'Affaires Zuheir Jabbour from the U.S., an action mirrored by?Australia, Canada, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, and Germany. ?

"We hold the Syrian government responsible for this slaughter of innocent lives," a spokesman for the department said.

Images of bloodied, young bodies laid out in a shallow grave after Friday's onslaught triggered shock around the world and underlined the failure of a six-week-old U.N. cease-fire plan to stop the violence.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights earlier said its monitors found that fewer than 20 of the victims died from artillery fire. It was first thought the majority of the deaths were caused by artillery fire.

Syrian authorities had blamed "terrorists" for the massacre, among the worst carnage in the 14-month-old uprising against Assad, which has cost about 10,000 lives.

Clinton condemns Syria massacre: Assad's 'rule by murder' must end

Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UNHCR, told the journalists in Geneva that initial investigations suggest fewer than 20 of the victims in the village of Taldou, near Houla, were killed by artillery or tank fire.

"Most of the rest of the victims in Taldou," he told the BBC, "were summarily executed in two separate incidents."

Most of the victims were shot at close range. "At this point it looks like entire families were shot in their houses," Colville was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

He said the conclusions of the U.N. monitors are corroborated by other sources, and that witnesses blamed pro-government militias for the attacks.

The findings came as UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was meeting President Bashar Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.

UN Security Council condemns Syria massacre that left more than 100 dead

U.S. officials say that dozens of people, including children, were killed by Syrian government forces in the central town of Houla. NBC's Richard Engel reports. Warning: Some of the images are disturbing.

The U.N. Security Council on Sunday unanimously condemned the Syrian government for heavy-weapons attacks on Houla.

"The Security Council condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more in the village of (Houla), near Homs, in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighborhood," a non-binding statement said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton demanded that those who carried out the killings be held to account.

"The United States will work with the international community to intensify our pressure on Assad and his cronies, whose rule by murder and fear must come to an end," she said.

Sequoia smog damaging pines, redwood seedlings

SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) ? On a clear day, the view from Beetle Rock in Sequoia National Park extends west for 105 miles across the patchwork of crops in California's agricultural heartland to the Coast Mountains and the Pacific Ocean beyond.

The problem is there are few clear days, even at 6,200 feet.

The Sierra Nevada forest that is home to the biggest and among the oldest living things on earth ? the giant Sequoia redwoods ? also suffers a dubious distinction. It has the worst air pollution of any national park in the country.

Mountaintops that should offer awe-inspiring views of California's geologic grandeur often are muddled by a disorienting gray soup of smog.

"Ozone levels here are comparable to urban settings such as LA," said Emily Schrepf of the nonprofit advocacy group the National Park Conservation Association as she beheld the diminished view. "It's just not right."

This is not the place to take in a whiff of fresh mountain air. Smog is so bad that signs in visitors centers caution guests when it's not safe to hike. The government employment website warns job applicants that the workplace is unhealthy. And park workers are schooled every year on the lung and heart damage the pollution can cause.

Ozone also is to blame for weakening many stands of the park's Jeffrey and ponderosa pines, leaving telltale yellowing of their long needles. Instead of absorbing carbon dioxide, they soak up ozone through the stoma in their needles, which inhibits photosynthesis. Ozone also stresses young redwood seedlings, which already face challenges to survival.

Although weakened trees are more susceptible to drought and pests, the long-term impact on the pines and on the giant redwoods that have been around for 3,000 years and more is unclear.

"It's not a great story to tell, but it's an important story to tell because you can look at us as being the proverbial canary in a coalmine," said Annie Esperanza, a park scientist who has studied air quality there for 30 years. "If this is happening in a national park that isn't even close to an urban area, what do you think is happening in your backyard?"

It's a problem in a handful of the nation's 52 parks that are monitored constantly for ozone, including Joshua Tree National Park in California's Mojave Desert and North Carolina's Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is ringed by power plants and several major highways including Interstate 40, a major tractor-trailer shipping route. But none is in the ballpark with Sequoia and its neighbor, Kings Canyon.

Under the Clean Air Act, the region that encompasses Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks has been designated a "Class 1 air shed," which means by 2064 it must have pure air with no degradation of visibility. But that apparently didn't take into consideration its proximity to one of the worst air quality basins in the country.

"It does take visitors by surprise," Esperanza said. "On a day it's unhealthy, we ask people if you're going to do a rigorous hike, we recommend early morning. It's limiting, it's quite telling, and it's very sad."

While forest fires create some pollution, the lion's share comes from the San Joaquin Valley, the expanse of farmland that is home to the California's two busiest north-south trucking highways, diesel freight train corridors, 1.7 million dairy cows, food processing plants and tens of thousands of diesel tractors plowing dusty fields. Its trough shape traps pollutants, and high-pressure systems act like a lid on a pot.

Smog is created when the sun's rays hit pollutants such as oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds that are in motor vehicle exhaust, solvents, pesticides, gasoline vapors and decaying dairy manure.

"There is no simple answer to ozone pollution," said Thomas Cahill, a researcher at the University of California, Davis who studies air problem in Sequoia and across California.

Breathing ozone at high levels for even a short time can blister the lungs like UV rays blisters skin, scientists agree. The problem in quantifying exposure levels, however, is that some people suffer pulmonary damage at lower doses than others.

Dr. David Lighthall, health science adviser for the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, says ozone levels at high altitudes don't drop at night like they do in the valley, which leads to "more cumulative exposure for those who live and work there."

Southerly breezes from the San Francisco Bay collect pollutants and push them to the valley's southern rim, where they bounce back north. Between Fresno and Visalia ? just below the park ? the warm air hits the cooler air pushing south and gets trapped in a swirling vortex called the Fresno Eddy. The warm, polluted air then rises up the canyons of three rivers that begin in the park.

The only way to improve air in the park is to improve the San Joaquin air basin, something that so far has proved elusive given the myriad sources. Even with hundreds of millions of dollars spent to retrofit diesel engines and replace gasoline lawnmowers with electric ones, residents pay a federal fine for the region's failure to meet even minimal EPA ozone limits.

"We don't create a disproportionate amount of pollution; it's just that we have these natural challenges so that the pollution we do create can take literally weeks or months to clean out. It just builds up over time," said Jaime Holt, spokeswoman for the valley air district.

Already this year, the level of ozone in Sequoia park has exceeded federal health standards, even though it's early in the summer ozone season. During the June-to-September summer season last year, the park violated the National Ambient Air Quality standard at least 87 times, compared with 56 at Joshua Tree and 12 at Great Smoky Mountains.

"It's tragic that the National Park Service is known for clean air, and then you see a sign saying it's unhealthy to breathe," Esperanza said. "It's so contrary to the national parks idea."

Calif. death row inmate found hanging in prison cell

By msnbc.com staff and news services

LOS ANGELES -- James Lee Crummel, a?pedophile and convicted killer sentenced to die for the 1979 murder of a teenage boy, has hanged himself on California's death row, months before voters in the state are due to decide whether to abolish the death penalty, prison officials said on Tuesday.

The 68-year-old was found hanging in his cell at San Quentin State Prison, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Sam Robinson said in a written statement.

He was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. local time (8.20 p.m. ET) on Sunday, Robinson said.

Crummel had been housed on death row since he was sentenced to death in 2004 for the 1979 kidnapping, sexual abuse and murder of 13-year-old James Wilfred Trotter.

Trotter was snatched as he walked to meet his school bus in Costa Mesa, California, in April of 1979. His charred remains were found more than a decade later, in 1990, but not confirmed as that of the boy until 1996.

Crummel was also convicted in San Bernardino County, California, for molesting three boys in Big Bear City, and was suspected of abducting and killing 9-year- old Big Bear Lake resident Jack "J.D." Phillips, who disappeared near his home in 1995, the San Bernadino Sun newspaper reported.?

It said?Jack's remains have never been located, and his father said in June 2004 that Crummel refused to disclose to authorities where the boy's remains were located unless the death penalty was taken off the table.

The suicide comes ahead of a ballot measure in November which asks voters to repeal the death penalty in California, home to nearly a quarter of the nation's death row inmates.

The ballot initiative focuses on the high cost of the death penalty in a state that has executed 13 people since capital punishment was reinstated in the nation in 1976. More than 720 inmates sit on death row pending lengthy and expensive appeals.

Crummel joins another 20 inmates who have committed suicide while on California's death row. According to the corrections department, since capital punishment was reinstated in California in 1978, 57 condemned inmates in the state have died from natural causes and six died from other causes.

A federal judge halted all California executions in 2006 after ruling that the three-drug protocol that has been used for lethal injections carried the risk of causing the inmate too much pain and suffering before death.

California has since revised its protocol but an appeals court has blocked resumption of executions over the same objections.

A 1997 profile of Crummel and the detective who helped secure a key conviction against him, was re-published by the Orange County Register on Wednesday.

Florida: Mystery sponge-killing disease now seen from Palm Beach to lower Keys

From Sombrero Reef down in the Keys to the waters of West Palm Beach, red barrel sponges are disintegrating at worrisome rates. The culprit is?unknown, and state scientists are busy trying to figure out just how widespread the disease outbreak is.At the end of April, Ed Tichenor of Palm Beach County Reef Rescue first observed sponges?disintegrating. By the first week of May, he confirmed that the sponges, an animal, were dying from Breakers Reef in Palm Beach south to at least Delray Beach.?

Now, officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirm with New Times that similar observations have been made in waters off Broward, Key Biscayne, and the Florida Keys.?

"We are trying to get a handle on the extent of how widespread the disease outbreak is right now," says Rob Ruzicka, program manager at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. "As far as we can tell, this is the largest event we've seen so far, at least in Florida."

It's unclear what's actually killing the sponges. Scientists have dubbed the syndrome Sponge Orange Band, which only describes the symptoms, but they haven't been able to confirm the actual pathogen?responsible.??

"It's totally possible that whatever is causing the disease here could spread to the rest of the Caribbean in a matter of months or a year," Ruzicka says. "We might just be witnessing the very early stages of something larger... We need to find out if it's a widespread pandemic and, if so, how much of the sponge population it is affecting."

Another aspect researchers are trying to determine is?whether?the phenomenon?has moved south toward the Keys or north along the reef tract. ??

"Typically, you look up-current," says Tichenor of Palm Beach County Reef Rescue. "I'm suggesting that we need to look at what's coming out of the Gulf of Mexico."

Tichenor says the first step should be to conduct what's called a PAH analysis, a test to?determine?if polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are in the water. Strong pollutants, PAHs are present in crude-oil?deposits, among other things.?

"If this is a containment, I think sponges are likely the first organism to be impacted because they're filtering the water. That's what they do," Tichenor says. "It seems that whatever they're filtering out of the water is killing them. The question now is what's in the water."

Ruzicka and state officials will be heading to the Dry Tortugas to inspect the waters in the coming weeks, and they'll be checking back on the upper and lower Keys through June and July. Tichenor will continue to monitor the local waters.

President Obama tucks Michelle in every night, Michelle says

First lady Michelle Obama hugs President Barack Obama during a ceremony in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House complex in Washington, Monday, Nov., 21, 2011.

He may be the leader of the free world, but he still takes a moment to tuck his wife in at bedtime.

First Lady Michelle Obama revealed that tidbit and other details from the couple?s personal life in a People magazine interview that hit newsstands Friday.

"We have a ritual where he tucks me in, because I'm usually in bed before anybody," the First Lady spilled. "He'll come and turn the lights out and give me a kiss, and we'll talk. He's like, Ready to be tucked? I'm like, Yes I am.'"

Obama has been promoting her new book ?American Grown,? about the White House Kitchen Garden.

She served up a few other nuggests from behind the scene in People.

FLOTUS said she and her husband try to steal as much alone time as possible despite their busy schedules.

For instance, the First Family eats dinner together at 6:30 each evening.

"The first half hour, we're talking to the girls, then we shoo them off to go walk Bo and catch a little check-in without the kids," she said.

The First Lady also talked about her husband?s penchant for singing - a fact that should come as no surprise to most Americans, as President Obama has made headlines on more than one occassion with an impromptu outburst of song. (The president?s repetoire includes Al Green?s ?Let?s Stay Together,? LMFOA?s ?Sexy And I Know It? and the classic, ?Sweet Home Chigaco.?)

Barack loves to sing around the house, too, the First Lady told People.

"He loves it in the shower in the morning, sings to the kids," she said. "But it's not a song. He'll sing one line of something romantic or cute. Oh yes."

Fiat readies archrival for Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster

Fiat 500X CrossoverFiat has created some of the most fashionable nameplates such as the Bravo, 500, Punto and Panda.

The 500 has been the hottest nameplate that has the added advantage of being an icon of motoring and Fiat is now said to be working overtime to help it create variants to enter new and fast developing segments.

Shortly after the arrival of the 500L MPV at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, speculations began on a compact crossover, dubbed 500X, to arrive next year. Fiat could make a presentation of this model perhaps at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

Details are scarce but what we understand is this is a top-hat on the 500 platform.

The 500X crossover competes with the likes of the Ford EcoSport and Nissan Juke. Although most of the versions of the 500X will be front wheel drive, expect a 4?4 model to drive in at a later date. Under the hood, Fiat will rely on the magic created by the 1.3-liter Multi-jet engine and the 900cc TwinAir engine, on so many of its other models, to provide the 500X motivation. The car?s length could be under 4.2 meters.

If Fiat decides to bring the Panda platform to India (which the 500 and its variants are also based on), it can quickly fill up gaps in its lineup and present a mini SUV that brands like Ford and Renault expect to lead them to treasure island.

Mexico's Zetas cartel rewrites drug war in blood

Mexican government forces had bottled up a band of enemy fighters in this tiny village late last year, but feared they would escape into the dusty, rock-strewn hills. So more than 600 soldiers and federal police closed in from all directions with armored Humvees and helicopters.

The outlaws responded with a barrage of rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47 assault-rifle fire, tearing apart one federal police vehicle. For three days the fighting raged.

In the end, according to military accounts of the battle, 22 members of the Zetas drug cartel, two police officers and a soldier were dead, and 20 Zetas were in custody. Dozens more escaped to fight another day.

The battle could have been a scene from the war in Afghanistan, but it erupted just 45 miles south of the Texas border. It was only one of dozens like it in northeastern Mexico in recent months as soldiers, marines and police have engaged in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with roaming Zetas hit squads.

Formed in 1998 by 14 former Mexican soldiers, the Zetas have grown to command more than 10,000 gunmen from the Rio Grande, on the border with Texas, to deep into Central America. Their rapid expansion has displaced Mexico's older cartels in many areas, giving them a dominant position in the multi-billion-dollar cross-border drug trade, as well as extortion, kidnapping and other criminal businesses.

Video: Brutal violence escalates in Mexico drug wars (on this page)

But it is bloodshed that has made the Zetas notorious. And feared.

Zetas killers have been arrested for some of the worst atrocities in Mexico's drug war, including the murders of hundreds of people whose bodies have been found in mass graves with alarming frequency, the massacre of 72 foreign migrant workers headed to the United States, and the burning of a casino that claimed 52 lives.

On Sunday, Mexican soldiers said they had arrested Daniel Elizondo, a Zetas leader known as "The Madman," as the alleged perpetrator of the massacre of 49 people whose corpses were decapitated, dismembered and dumped on a highway a week earlier. In the last month, the Zetas have also been linked to the decapitation of 18 people near Guadalajara and the hanging of nine in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. In those two cases, messages left at the scenes, signed by the Zetas, said the victims were rival traffickers.

Alleged perpetrator of mass beheadings in Mexico arrested

Mexican and U.S. agents say the Zetas' paramilitary tactics ? based on small, roaming cells of armed operatives ? and indiscriminate violence are the driving forces behind a recent escalation in Mexico's drug war. That conflict, between government forces and the cartels and among the cartels themselves, has claimed about 55,000 lives in the past five years, including more than 3,000 police officers and soldiers.

'Like urban guerillas'
The Zetas pose a bigger challenge to the government than older cartels because of the intensity of their attacks against security forces, their disregard for civilian life and the murderous habits that break the unspoken codes of older traffickers. The brutality has made their heartland in northeastern Mexico a no-go area for many businessmen and tourists.

Mexican police officers and soldiers on the front lines say the Zetas have more in common with insurgents than traditional gangs. "The Zetas act like urban guerrillas," said Florencio Santos, a former soldier and now police chief in Guadalupe, a town on the southern outskirts of Monterrey. "They'll make a phone call to get the police out, then block the street in front of the patrol cars and open fire from the front and the side."

Drugs, guns, gangs: Child actors shame Mexico's politicians with mockumentary

Drug agents say the goals of the Zetas also differ from Mexico's traditional smuggling families. While older cartels focused on trafficking routes and drug-producing areas, the Zetas move into any town or city where they can to carry out shakedowns and other crimes.

"The Zetas have created a new model of organized crime and unleashed new levels of violence to try and unseat the older cartels," said Mike Vigil, the former head of international operations for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. "This has destabilized many areas of Mexico."

A report by Mexico's organized crime unit, SIEDO, found that the Zetas now control more territory than the nation's oldest and wealthiest trafficking organization, the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman. The report, leaked in January, says that while the Sinaloans operate in 16 of Mexico's 32 federal entities, the Zetas are in 17.

They are creeping into the United States, too. A grand jury in Laredo, Texas, in April indicted four alleged Zetas for conspiracy to murder and traffic drugs on U.S. soil. The charges follow another Laredo trial in January in which two alleged Zetas were found guilty on weapons and homicide charges.

Cross-border methamphetamine trade booms amid Mexico's 'war on drugs'

Zetas gunmen are alleged by Mexican prosecutors to be behind the killing of U.S. customs agent Jaime Zapata in Mexico in 2011, the first American agent to be murdered on duty here since the 1980s. The U.S. government is offering a $5 million reward for the capture of the Zetas supreme commander, 37-year-old Heriberto Lazcano, alias "The Executioner."

War zone
The Zetas stronghold in northeastern Mexico, across the border from Texas, has become Mexico's most violent region. In Nuevo Leon state, home to the rich industrial city Monterrey and villages such as Vallecillo, there were more than 685 drug-related killings by mid-May, according to media tallies. This put it ahead of even Chihuahua state, with 560 gangland slayings and home to Mexico's previous murder capital, Ciudad Juarez, dominated by the Juarez Cartel.

One killed every half hour in Mexico drug-related violence

Nuevo Leon can seem like a state under siege. Zetas graffiti mark the group's territory. Many local residents, aware that gang hit men regularly murder people accused of snitching, are too scared to help the police. Police and soldiers in Nuevo Leon say they move only in convoys of at least 30 troops because of the threat of Zetas ambushes, a precaution not needed in most of the rest of the country.

Guadalupe police chief Santos survived an ambush in September because the bullets didn't pierce his armored vehicle. "It was a terrifying moment," Santos said. "I thought the bullets might get through, but the vehicle held until reinforcements came."

Slideshow: Narco culture permeates Mexico, leaks across border (on this page)

Some of his fellow policemen weren't so lucky. Last year the Zetas murdered 13 of Guadalupe's 300 street officers and destroyed 48 patrol cars through such attacks. Santos and most of his officers now sleep inside a barracks for protection.

The Zetas are aided by an effective network of spies. These hawks, as they are called, are typically teenagers or young men and women paid about $600 a month, Guadalupe police say. In a country with a minimum wage of about $5 a day, that money can buy a lot of support.

When a Reuters reporter accompanied police in Guadalupe on a recent patrol, officers listened to a radio frequency used by the gangsters. Zetas hawks could be heard warning their cohorts about the convoy of police vehicles moving into a slum on the edge of Monterrey.

Santos, the police chief, said he fought Zapatista guerrillas when they took up arms in the southern state of Chiapas in 1994 to fight for the rights of indigenous people. The Zetas, he says, are a far deadlier foe. "The Zetas have much better training and better armaments than the Zapatistas did."

Public recruiting
The Zetas' supreme leader, Lazcano, was born in 1974 in the village of Acatlan in Hidalgo state, the local birth registry shows. This community of cattle farms and corn plots more than 600 miles from the Mexico-U.S. border provides its youth with few opportunities. Many young men head north to enter the U.S. illegally, or they join the armed forces.

As a child, Lazcano moved with his family to the nearby city of Pachuca, settling in the working-class barrio of Tezontle, police say. The clutch of dusty streets and unpainted cinder-block houses lies next to a military base, where records show Lazcano enlisted with the Mexican army at age 17 to become an infantryman.

Mexico's drug war: No sign of 'light at the end of the tunnel'

He was following in the footsteps of the founding Zetas, many of whom also came from central and southern Mexico and served in military divisions -- infantry, motorized cavalry, special forces -- whose regulars often received training from the U.S.

A 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks shows that at least one Zeta, former infantry lieutenant Rogelio Lopez, trained at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Declassified U.S. training manuals used for Latin American officers include sections on combat intelligence and use of informants, both strong points of the Zetas.

Lazcano deserted from the infantry in 1998 to join the Zetas, then led by former paratrooper Arturo Guzman Decena. At the time the Zetas were still devoted to their original mission: acting as debt collectors and killers for the Gulf Cartel, a dominant gang, moving hundreds of tons of cocaine, marijuana and heroin into Texas.

The enforcers adopted the name Zeta -- the letter Z in Spanish -- from a radio signal Guzman had used as a paratrooper. Guzman baptized himself Z-1, and Lazcano became Z-3.

A few months later, after Mexican soldiers shot dead both Z-1 and his second in command, Lazcano took control of the Zetas at age 28 and began the group's rapid expansion. They spread the word on the streets, and even advertised on blankets hung from bridges: "The Zeta operations group wants you, soldier or ex-soldier," one said. "We offer a good salary, food and attention for your family. Don't suffer hunger and abuse anymore."

Video: 'The border is not secure' (on this page)

They recruited poor youths, former soldiers, members of other gangs and even foreign mercenaries, including former members of the Kaibil special forces in Guatemala's army, according to the Guatemalan security ministry. The Kaibiles were widely accused of atrocities in that nation's civil war.

As the Zetas grew, so did their ambitions, causing tension with the Gulf Cartel bosses. The first cracks in the alliance appeared in 2007, when Gulf Cartel leaders made a peace deal with the Sinaloa Cartel, a move the Zetas saw as a sellout, according to testimony from Zeta founding member Jesus Rejon, or Z-7, after he was arrested in 2011.

In 2010, tensions boiled over into open warfare as Zetas began attacking Gulf operatives wherever they found them and claiming the turf for themselves. The Gulf Cartel allied with their old Sinaloan rivals to fight back, engulfing the region in violence.

It is impossible to know the Zetas' share of the U.S. narcotics market, which is estimated by the United Nations to be worth a total of about $60 billion annually.

But it's clear that the Zetas' stronghold in northeastern Mexico includes some of the most sought-after trafficking routes into the United States. More than 8,500 trucks cross daily into Texas from the border city of Nuevo Laredo, twice the number crossing from either Tijuana or Ciudad Juarez.

Video: 'No end to this war' (on this page)

To warehouse and move these drugs, the Zetas have set up cells in Laredo, Dallas and Houston, a U.S. federal court heard this January when it convicted two members of such a cell on homicide, racketeering and weapons charges. Evidence from wiretaps and witnesses show that the cells also move guns bought in U.S. stores and cash into Mexico. U.S. federal prosecutors in Texas say Zetas gunmen have carried out at least eight murders on U.S. soil to date.

The Zetas have also made billions of dollars by diversifying into extortion, kidnapping, product piracy and even theft of crude oil from the pipelines of Mexico's state-owned oil monopoly, Pemex, U.S. agents say. In a recent report, Pemex said it had lost 11.7 million barrels of oil to theft in 2010 and 2011, citing the Zetas as the main culprit.

This diversification breaks with the habits of older cartels, which have focused on drugs. And as the Zetas have made money with their portfolio of crimes, copycat gangs have sprung up with names such as "The Hands With Eyes."

In Guadalupe, police chief Santos said the Zetas receive protection payments, known as "quotas," from taxi operators, restaurants and other local businesses. "Most people pay up because they are so scared of what the Zetas will do," Santos said.

During the recent patrol, police were called to the scene of a shooting, finding a car dealership riddled with bullet holes, in what Santos said was a reminder over these payments.

PhotoBlog: 45 dead in attack on casino in Northern Mexico

When the Zetas burned down a Monterrey casino in broad daylight in August, the alleged reason was an extortion payment, according to federal prosecutors who have filed charges against alleged Zetas arrested for the crime.

The desire for shakedown money has fueled the spread of the Zetas across Mexico, investigators say. "What they want to do is control territory and physical space, where they can simply co-opt other businesses and collect tax," said Steven Dudley of the Washington-based research group Insight Crime. "That model is easily replicated."

'Anonymous warriors ... proudly Mexican'
Agents say that as the Zetas have expanded, they have filled their ranks with unruly thugs who can be hard to control. "These new players ... are doing things that might not be sanctioned by the leadership. ... The outrageous behavior has made them the big target of the government," said a senior U.S. law enforcement official working in Mexico, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Such wild elements may have been behind the May 13 atrocity that made headlines around the world. Early that morning, 49 corpses with their heads, hands and feet cut off were left on a highway east of Monterrey. A note signed with the Zetas name was found amidst the carnage. However, messages released in the following days denied the Zetas had ordered the massacre.

Nearly 50 mutilated bodies dumped on Mexico highway

Investigators say Elizondo, arrested a week later as the alleged mastermind of the massacre, may have disobeyed top leaders in carrying it out. None of the victims have been identified. Police said they could have been foreign migrants traveling through Mexico to the United States. The Zetas often kidnap migrants for ransom and murder those who don't pay.

Zetas assassins have been effective in fighting rivals. In the last year, the Zetas have pushed the Gulf Cartel out of much of its historic turf along the South Texas border and challenged the Sinaloa Cartel close to their homeland in the Pacific. In a single ambush in the Pacific state of Nayarit in 2011, Zetas slaughtered 29 alleged Sinaloa Cartel operatives when the Zetas attacked with mounted machine guns and grenades.

Even more brutally, Zetas prisoners in February stabbed and bludgeoned to death 44 alleged Gulf Cartel inmates in a jail on the edge of Monterrey. After the attack, which officials say involved the help of corrupt guards, 35 Zetas prisoners escaped.

Several other major cartels have formed an alliance to hit back against the Zetas with their own paramilitary units, U.S. agents said in testimony at a congressional hearing in October evaluating Mexico's drug war. At the forefront of the fight back is a shady group calling itself the "Zetas killers," believed to be funded by rival cartels. Gunmen from this group dropped 35 corpses of suspected Zetas on a highway in Veracruz state in September.

In a video released after the incident, men in ski masks claimed they were going after the Zetas because of the harm their extortion and kidnapping rackets inflicted on communities. "We want the armed forces to trust us that our only goal is to finish off the Zetas," a man in a ski mask says on the video. "We're anonymous warriors, faceless, but proudly Mexican."

Since President Felipe Calderon took power in 2006 and sent 50,000 soldiers after the drug cartels, Mexican and U.S. agents have worked together to root out top drug traffickers.

The most spectacular takedowns include Arturo Beltran Leyva, a breakaway boss of the Sinaloa Cartel, who was shot dead by Mexican marines in 2009, and La Familia boss Nazario Moreno, whom police killed in 2010.

Video: Video of kid criminals stirs controversy in Mexico (on this page)

Lazcano and his top deputies have proved to be more elusive, thanks to their military-style organization. "They've got an advance guard, they've got a main body, they've got a rear guard," the U.S. official said. "They do forward reconnaissance almost like you would see if you were moving a dignitary around."

Zetas leaders also escape detection by using encrypted radio and Skype instead of telephones, the U.S. official said. Agents say leaders of the group's small operating cells are moved every few months to avoid detection.

Mexican soldiers say they came close to nabbing Lazcano in a house on the outskirts of Monterrey in 2009, but that after scouts warned him of the raid, he escaped the neighborhood in a bulletproof Jeep Cherokee.

With Lazcano still at large, the Zetas will pose a challenge for the next Mexican president. Calderon is barred by law from seeking re-election in the July polls. The current front-runner, Enrique Pena Nieto of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, has pledged to create and deploy a new police force against the gangs and gradually put army troops back in barracks, a promise popular with many voters who are tired of the relentless drug war.

Zetas hit squads could make that difficult. A message signed by the Zetas and hung from a bridge in Monterrey in February took aim at the Mexican government. "Even with the support of the United States, they cannot stop us, because here the Zetas rule," it said. "The government must make a pact with us because if not we will have to overthrow it and take power by force."

Listen, I?m not here to argue the merits of co-sleeping, The Family Bed, or any of that Dr. Sears, 70s, ?joyful granola snuggling?? stuff ? just like I wouldn?t dare pipe in on breastfeeding. They?re your boobs. Cracked nipples are your God-given right.

But most experts agree that the very latest age to call it a day on sharing your nights is age six. The majority of co-sleeping parents transition their kids around age three. I mean, they are big, cover-kicking space-suckers. The co-sleeping advantage is generally better sleep for infants and ease of breastfeeding.

After that developmental stage, you have to ask yourself what you are getting out of the arrangement. Age six is a time for independence and growth, not cuddling mommy. What you have smack in the middle of you and your husband is one rather large intimacy block. I didn?t say sex, I said intimacy. Unless you two are having a rockin? time in the closet, I?m betting that suffers, too. Your husband is right ? it?s transition time, sister. Your boy is ready. Are you?

Dear Sassy,
I?m single. Is it wrong to have an affair with a married man if he?s unhappy in his marriage?

Baaahaaa! If you?re writing this, let?s get honest ? you already are having an affair. Maybe you?re not bumping uglies, but certainly the emotional relationship is in place if ?Mr. Married? is confiding how ?unhappy? he is in his marriage.

I?m going to come at you from a place of zero judgment because 1) I?m a therapist and that?s what we do, and 2) most of us have danced some version of this tango. I can also sympathize with the fact that some marriages don?t work. People get married young, fall in and out of love, change, grow, have kids that run screaming down paint-covered walls biting people. Money, careers, in-laws ? there is a cornucopia of reasons marriages don?t stick. These things happen. If he and his wife fell out of love, I would sympathize with that and wish him well moving on.

That being said, there is no scenario in which dating a still-married man is a positive action for you. Barring that perfect exception of a man (cue every bullsh*t Rom-Com or Intervention) trapped in a hostile relationship where his wife beats him, or has cancer, or whatever, and he just can?t leave, you are not going to be the one sailing into the sunset with him. Here is what generally happens: He won?t leave his wife for you. Will not. His cheating shows you how he responds to things in his life he doesn?t like, and sister, you could be next.

Sneaking around and hiding is exhausting. You think you?re busy now? Add ?mistress? to your job description. Remember, America?s sweetheart is not Brangelina, it?s Jen Aniston. He?s not only having his cake, but he?s stolen every piece at the party and eating that, too. Relationships born from adultery survive at a rate of less than 5%. You have better odds of being California?s next Super Lotto winner.

Your time is valuable and precious. Respect yourself and devote your attention to a man that is available and worthy of your affection.
