Denver Community College program helps male students help themselves

Ryan Ross says he works "in dreams and visions." But when the dean of students and retention along with other officials at the Community College of Denver were considering creating a program to help male students navigate collegiate life, he knew there were no guarantees of success.

"For some, there's the pride factor, them saying, 'I'm a man, I take care of my own and I'm not gonna ask anybody for help," Ross said. "We have men here who are in dire situations. Maybe they're homeless; maybe they're not eating. We have a food bank but they won't go because they don't want to show weakness.

"They'll say, ' I'm on the campus, but I don't want a pity party.' "

In those cases, Ross continues, the challenge is to help students realize that it's OK to ask for help, whether it's for something as big as something to eat or as seemingly minor as buying the right textbook for class. And for the last few months, one of Ross' flights of fancy, CCD's Urban Male Initiative, has done just that.

The program, which was launched in March, has already started making inroads in helping students deal with life on campus and in areas like professional development. Presently, part of the school's academic advising center, the initiative has been so well received that officials now believe much greater success lies ahead.

"We won't fail," said Leslie McClellon, CCD's vice president of student development. "Within a couple of years, it will be a department of its own."

At any level, college can be a daunting experience. That's especially true in the community college system, where the vast majority of students commute, many of them taking classes while trying to manage jobs and families.

When those pressures become too much, it's often school that suffers, particularly for men. At CCD, for example, fewer than 40 percent of the students are men, and according to McClellon, each year between 33 and 50 percent of them leave.

"That's why this is so important ? we don't want to lose our men," she said. "A lot of them will say there are too many obstacles, too much going on."

And so, even when men are on campus, they often are looking to get off.

"I used to come here for classes and go straight home," said Clenton Tunson, Jr. of Denver, a student at the school. "I never saw what was available. I was doing myself a disservice."

One day this spring, Tunson stuck around long enough for a scholarship meeting that was cancelled. But before he could bolt, someone told him to check out another event ? an Urban Male Initiative meeting.

"It was 2 o'clock on a Friday. I was skeptical," Tunson said. "I didn't know what they were going to ask of me, but I walked in and I haven't left since."

A father of three, Tunson enrolled in school after he was laid off from his job at a mechanical engineering design firm. For a time, he thought it might be better for him to work and let his wife continue school. But his lack of a degree was holding him back from even getting interviewed for jobs, he said. And he also realized that preaching the value of education to his children would ring hollow if he wasn't walking the talk himself.

"Men will drop out and get a job to support their family. But they don't realize it takes both (him and his wife) to finish and get the degree to help them achieve the life that they want," McClellon said. "This program is a way to wrap our arms around them and say, 'This is for you. Let us help you get through the hard times and get to that end result.' "

Typical of those efforts is the two-week summer bridge program Urban Male Initiative is offering to its students next month. The first week will be spent on academics ? "How do you study?" Ross said. "When you pick up a book, how do you read it?"

In the second week, the participants will work on their leadership skills, with part of the curriculum listening to real-life stories from members of the Denver community.

"We don't want the fluff leadership speech ? we want to know, how did you fail and how did you get up?" Ross said. "We want to really give the students that push, to say I have to keep going because here's somebody who's a role model and they've had pitfalls and they were able to get up."

Even in Ross' perfect world, there will still be stumbles. But those who fall won't have to worry about scrambling back to their feet alone.

"When it's graduation day," he said, "We'll walk across the stage together ? all of us, not just some of us."

Ultrabook sales up in first half of 2012, Windows 8 waits patiently

We've seen so much Ultrabook news recently we're beginning to think they're catching on. Market research firm the NPD Group has stepped in to confirm our suspicions, reporting a 39 percent jump in sales of premium Windows laptops (900 bucks and up) during the first five months of this year, compared with the same period in 2011. Despite a three percent drop in sales of $700-plus Windows notebooks, the Ultrabook share of this bracket increased steadily to nearly 11 percent. The analysts predict sales of these lower-end models will pick up as back-to-school purchases sooth the post-summer blues, with a general boost to the whole Ultrabook market expected when Windows 8 arrives. One thing the figures don't tell us is what impact these sales are having on the revenue of Apple's skinny flagship, but we'd sure like to know. If numbers are your thing, the PR is past the break.

The Downstairs
When you walk into the house you enter into a mud room but to enter the and leave the house there is a lock system in which you have to type in a code in which the staff are the only ones to have it. You walk into a hallway to the right there is an open doorway that goes into the kitchen, which has all cupboards locked up to all the patients, its a large room with the kitchen things on the left and to the right as a large table that has 13 chairs. Off of the kitchen is a room that is locked and can only be opened by staff, Patients where never allowed in this room. This was the staff/med room, this was where the staff kept their things and where the medication was locked up, it also had a small bathroom off to the side.

Back into the hallway on the left there are two doors. The first one was to the living room, in the living room there was two couches and two chairs with a tv on the wall with a small shelving with videos and dvds but they are locked up. There was a bookshelf filled with books and a table with a couple chairs. The next room was the activity/day room. This is where most groups and group activities will be, it had a few tables with chairs in it, a shelf with doors that is locked that has different games, activities, and crafts. The stairs are off of this room. The last room is the Treatment room, which is at the end of the hallway and locked, this is where the therapist and doctor meet with each patient during the day.

The Upstairs
When you go up the stairs you first go into a hallway, to your left is the Nurse's room, which is locked, the Nurse lives there 24/7 and have a bathroom connected to it. Next to the nurses room is another hallway that has two rooms which are lockable, these are the safe rooms. Their is one for the girls and one for the boys, the safe rooms are used when a patient is either being a danger to others or themselves. The rooms are bare of anything and actually has padding all around it, there is a light on the ceiling that is actually in a cage looking thing.

Back in the hallway across the hall is the hallway to the bedrooms. The girls on the left and the boys on the right, the rooms start at Girl 5 and Boy 5 and goes down, the first three rooms on each side are found with a bed, nightstand, closet cupboard and dresser. The last rooms are shared by patients girl 1 & 2 and boy 1 & 2, they have two beds, two dressers, two nightstands and two closet cupboards. The bathrooms are found back if you go back out in the hallway and at the end of the hallway you take a left, the boys bathroom is the first room and the girls bathroom is the last room.

(AP) ? Google unveiled its attempt to catch up to Apple and Amazon in the growing market for tablet computers. It also provided a titillating glimpse at its vision of a digital future through the mind-boggling lens of Internet-connected glasses.

The debut of a long-anticipated tablet computer bearing Google's brand and equipped with its latest operating software kicked off an annual conference for about 6,000 computer programmers.

Although the tablet drew plenty of applause, the biggest crowd-pleasing moment came near the end of a nearly two-hour performance Wednesday when Google conjured a scene worthy of a "Mission Impossible" movie.

After Google co-founder Sergey Brin trotted on stage during the middle of a presentation, he cut away to a live video feed showing a group of skydivers the company hired to jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above downtown San Francisco.

The skydivers were wearing a pair of Internet-connected glasses. That allowed the audience inside to see what the skydivers were seeing as they parachuted on to the roof of the building where the conference was being held.

The glasses are still a work in progress, although Google gave U.S. programmers attending the conference a chance to order a $1,500 prototype that they can start experimenting with early next year.

The Google-branded tablet, called the Nexus 7, will start shipping next month in a direct challenge to Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. The tablet also could appeal to consumers looking for a less expensive, less sophisticated alternative to Apple Inc.'s iPad.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, an online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content. That mirrors Amazon's strategy with the Kindle Fire, although Amazon's strength in online retailing has seeded its store with a more extensive selection than Google Play. Amazon declined comment.

The size and price of the Nexus 7 also matches the Kindle Fire. Both have 7-inch screens and sell for $199. The Nexus 7 is slightly lighter at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound.

By contrast, the iPad's screen measures nearly 10 inches diagonally and weighs 1.44 pounds. Apple sells its latest models for $499 and up, though an older version is available for $399.

Customers can start ordering the Nexus 7 through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The device won't ship until mid-July.

Google's announcement that it's putting its brand on a tablet comes a week after Microsoft Corp. did the same thing. Both moves risk alienating Google's and Microsoft's hardware partners. Those companies, in turn, could be less inclined to work closely with Google and Microsoft.

The Nexus 7's price looks like a relative bargain, given that it boasts more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera with 1.2 megapixels. The Kindle is believed to be a roughly break-even product for Amazon at $199. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be selling the Nexus 7 at a loss.

Google has previously put its own brand on a flagship line of "Nexus" smartphones. But that market is more mature than the tablet market, and there was less risk of Google alienating partners, particularly because it didn't price the phones lower than the norm.

Much like the Nexus phones, the Nexus 7 tablet will be a showcase for a new version of Google's Android operating system ? this one called Jelly Bean.

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

Jeff Orr, an analyst with ABI Research, said Microsoft's announcement of its Surface tablet last week and Google's Nexus 7 add up to a "troubling" situation for tablet makers such as Samsung Electronics Co., which makes the Galaxy line.

When a software-supplying partner turns around and puts out its own hardware product, "is that a partner or an enemy?" Orr asked.

Orr also questioned whether Google's strategy of pricing the tablet low is really going to win it any fans in the long term. Apple, he noted, dominates the tablet market with a product that's expensive but works well.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

For Google, advertising dollars are at stake. If Apple retains its dominance and other players such as Amazon and Microsoft gobble up the rest of the sales, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles. Microsoft's will run on a new version of Windows.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

The iPad currently has about 68 percent of the tablet market, according to Forrester Research. The research firm expects the increasing competition to whittle the iPad's share to 53 percent in 2016, with Android-powered tablets at about 30 percent and Windows tablets accounting for the remainder. Forrester predicted 760 million tablets will be in use by 2016.

"Google's user base for music, books, and movies is not nearly as strong as Apple or Amazon, so it will take time to build a strong customer base" for the Nexus 7, predicted Forrester analyst Frank Gillett.

He also said the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets are at a disadvantage because computer programmers still haven't built as many compelling applications for that platform as they have for the iPad.

In another expansion into consumer electronics, Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q that is similar to Apple TV, a small box that can stream music and movies over Internet connections. The Nexus Q sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will be available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299. Apple TV currently sells for just $99. Other Internet-streaming devices, such as the Roku, that connect to TVs sell for even less than that.

The Internet-connected glasses that Google demonstrated won't be cheap either, although Brin told reporters Wednesday that the company plans to charge consumers significantly less than the $1,500 that developers had to pay for prototypes. The glasses, which Google is calling Project Glass, probably won't be released to the mass market until early 2014, Brin said.

"It's not a commodity product," Brin said. "We view this as a premium sort of thing."

Google began developing the Internet-connected glasses in a secret research lab more than two years ago and announced what it was working on in April. Wednesday's presentation marked the first extended demonstration of how the glasses might work.

Also on Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together.

Athletes' deaths in workouts prompt new guidelines

CHICAGO (AP) ? The most dangerous time for amateur athletes may not be during the heat of the game or even in rigorous practices. A total of 21 college football players have collapsed and died during conditioning workouts since 2000 ? many on the first few days, when even the fittest players are often pushed too hard.

There's little regulation of these sessions, and coaches "just run willy-nilly" trying to make men out of boys, said athletic trainer Douglas Casa. "A lot of them are not focused on health and safety issues."

Conditioning sessions typically include running sprints, lifting weights, and endurance exercises. Games and practices have more oversight and safeguards. These include heat acclimatization rules limiting equipment worn, intensity and number of sessions for summer practices. Between 2000 and 2011, there were no deaths among top-level college football players in practices or games.

Now, health and sports professionals are seeking to make conditioning sessions just as safe. They have collaborated to create the first consensus guidelines on preventing sudden deaths during these workouts. The sessions last about two hours each and most run from January to June or July, depending on the sport, though some teams schedule them throughout the year.

The football conditioning deaths "generally occurred with excessive exercise under the direction of a coach, often in extreme conditions, and in some cases with staff inadequately prepared to deal with the emergency in a timely or appropriate fashion," said Dr. Jolie Holschen, a Chicago emergency medicine and sports medicine specialist and co-author of the new guidelines.

The same recommendations are good advice for high schools and younger athletes, too, not just to prevent deaths but to keep players safe at every stage in every sport, said Casa, the University of Connecticut's athletic training education director. He helped draft the new guidelines.

The most common causes of the 21 NCAA deaths were heat stroke, heart conditions and a genetic trait related to sickle cell anemia that affected 10 athletes who died. Under ordinary conditions it doesn't cause problems. But pushing athletes with the trait too hard can disrupt the blood's ability to carry oxygen to muscles, which can be deadly. Casa said about 10 percent of black athletes carry the trait; smaller numbers of whites and Hispanics have it too.

U.S. infants are tested at birth for the trait, and the NCAA in 2010 began requiring blood tests for it in Division I athletes after Rice University football player Dale Lloyd II died during a conditioning workout in 2006. The requirement for Division II athletes took effect this year.

"At the high school level, we still have to rely on birth records," which coaches may not have access to, Casa said.

Bridgette Lloyd, the Rice player's mother, said she supports the move to make conditioning workouts safer.

"Our mission and goal since we lost our son has been more awareness. They need to be trained what to look for in any athlete, not just sickle cell trait," she said.

The new recommendations stress that conditioning workouts should be phased in rather than start at maximum intensity on day one. Exercise should not be used as punishment. Conditioning coaches should be trained in health and safety issues; certified in first aid, resuscitation and heart defibrillation; know which athletes have sickle cell trait; and know how to recognize signs and treat exercise-related complications from the condition. And they should be present during all conditioning sessions.

The recommendations come from several groups, including the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians. They were released Wednesday at the National Athletic Trainers Association annual meeting in St. Louis.

NCAA has policies echoing some of the recommendations and is evaluating the others, said David Klossner, the NCAA's director of health safety.

"We're supportive of the effort to address these issues that they raise," he said.

The guidelines challenge "the old athletic mentality that if a little bit is good, a lot must be better," said Jim Thornton, president of the trainers' association and head athletic trainer at Clarion University in Clarion, Pa.

Thornton said the new advice highlights the need better oversight in high schools, too. Many high schools have no athletic trainer and practices for many sports often take place without anyone trained in first aid present, he said.

"It's like dropping a kid off at a swimming pool with no lifeguard," he said.

Many of the athlete injuries cited involve a muscle-damaging condition called exertional rhabdomyolysis, rhabdo for short. Intense exertion can cause muscle cells to leak enzymes and protein into the blood. Symptoms include extreme muscle pain and dark urine. Severe cases can lead to kidney failure and sudden death.

Avoiding sudden, intense exertion and drinking plenty of fluids can help.

Reported cases include 13 University of Iowa football players hospitalized last year after a too-strenuous offseason weightlifting session and 12 Oregon high school football players treated in 2010 after an intense preseason workout.

"Working athletes longer and harder "is not exercising smart," said Holschen, the Chicago physician.

How to Become a Family Equipping Church | Children's Ministry ...

How to Become a Family Equipping Church Children\s Ministry YouthA Family-Equipping church begins with the mind-set that we will be intentional about making it a priority to champion the concept of parents as the primary disciple-makers in their children?s lives. ?Here are what could be considered the?Primary Principles that will Build a Strong Family Equipping Ministry:

A Strategic Question: How will this element of our ministry equip families to function as the Primary Spiritual Leaders of their Children?

Ask this question about each element of ministry. Any paradigm shift begins with an assessment of the existing model and requires an intentional change based on the desired outcome. Asking this question, every step along the way, ensures the desired objectives will remain a priority.

Parent with an Eternal Goal in Mind

Today?s culture places great pressure on parenting ?successful? children. This ?success? is typically measured by money ? getting a good job, getting in the best schools, focusing on education. Sometimes ?success? is determined by popularity ? success in sports, or beauty, or the arts. A Family Equipping Ministry will focus on equipping parents to see eternal goals as the priority in parenting. This includes accepting Christ as Savior; following Christ; Loving God; glorifying God in everything; and living out Christ?s Great Commission.

Parenting with an Intentional Plan. (Deut. 6:7)

Someone once said, ?If you fail to plan you?re planning to fail.? This is certainly true with parenting. Without a plan parents will soon find their kids grown and leaving home wondering ? what happened? We must equip parents with a biblical plan for raising their children ? how to evangelize and disciple, how to lead a family worship, how to live a life that honors God.

Intergenerational Interaction and Appreciation. (Psalm 48:13, 71:18; Titus 2)

One consequence of age segregated ministry has been the loss of intergenerational interaction. Creating intentional opportunities for all the generations to be together, to experience life together, and to interact together will significantly strengthen the faith community.

Biblical Faith is Best Taught in the Home. (Deut. 6:7, Prov. 22:6, Eph. 6)

The church is ordained by God and plays a significant role in the spiritual development of all its members. However, the first directive is to the parents for the training up of their children in the way of the Lord. We must uphold parents as the first and best disciple-makers of their own kids. We must create venues and resources to train and encourage our homes to be the place where biblical faith is taught first and best.

High Expectations for Husbands and Fathers. (Eph. 5)

We must encourage high expectations for all our parents ? however in today?s culture the biblical role given to men has largely been lost. Husbands and fathers have a unique biblical role to lead their families. The Bible clearly calls men to be the spiritual leaders in their home (Gen 3; 1 Cor 11). Men are charged with the spiritual care of their wives (Eph 5; 1 Peter 3) and the primary responsibility for training and instructing their children in the Lord (Deut 6; Eph 6). We must train men in a biblical understanding of servant leadership and equip them to be true spiritual leaders in their homes.

Passion for the Orphan and the Widow. (James 1:27)

As hard as we work to strengthen the family we must be equally diligent to build a faith community that ?adopts? those in our congregation without families, physical or spiritual. We must be intentional about providing unique opportunities for single parents and also for children who are spiritual orphans.

The scriptures are clear that the family is intended to be the primary Spiritual Influence in the life of a child.? We as churches should recognize that change is required to encourage and equip parents for their God ordained role a Spiritual Leaders.? We can successfully make this paradigm shift if we are willing to be intentional and strategic.

10 Steps to Fashioning Your Family History ? Obituarieshelp.org/Blog

We?ve had quite a few new genealogists joining us here at ObituariesHelp.org, and I wanted to welcome them with a brief recap on how to formulate a family tree. We as experienced genealogists remember (I hope!) how daunting a task tracing your family history seemed at first. Where do I start? Who do I look for first? Where do I look? These are just a few of the questions that revolve around your brain when first considering a genealogical project. If you are new to genealogical research, or considering a family history project, following these ten steps, and using the many free resources we provide for researchers, will help you to master the basics you need to build your family legacy. Ready? Okay, let?s get started.

1. Gather Resources From Around Your House
You may not know it, but you could already be sitting on top of a genealogical gold mine! Many researchers have found documents, family heirlooms, and other valuable genealogical information from scouring their basements, attics, old boxes stored in garages form their own homes and those of their relatives. Many older relatives may have kept a family bible; I know my grandmother did, and she had birth dates, death dates, marriage and baptism dates (and sometimes accompanying certificates) stored in hers. You could also find diaries, journals, letters, photo books, all of which can contain important genealogical material.

2. Interview Your Relatives
The collective wisdom of your relatives can help to build a firm, fast family tree. But don?t just barrage them with a bunch of questions designed to accumulate data. Facts are important, and do write them down, but rather talk to your relatives, asking them about their own lives and those of the ancestors they know about. A good idea is to record your conversations, that way you can transcribe them later, separating the facts from the family stories. Before you begin your interviews, read some of our tips on Interviewing Family Members to help you prepare. Whatever you do, make sure that any ?facts? you record can be backed up by official documentation. This brings us to our next step ? writing the information down.

3. Recording the Information
After gathering all of that information, you?ll need to record it in an organized, efficient manner. You can begin with one of our Free Family Tree Templates. We have them beginning at three generations right up to ten or more generations, but we recommend beginning with one of between three and five generations. A three generation chart will include information on you, your parents, and grandparents, while a five generation chart will take you right back to your great-great grandparents. You can download them for FREE, and all the instructions you need can be found in the instructional article located conveniently on the download page.

4. Pick a Target
You will undoubtedly have spaces in your family tree chart the further you go back in time, and once you have recorded all the ancestors you can, it is time to pick one of those empty spaces in your family tree and fill it! This is where your research begins, but to be successful research has to be focused. Choose one ancestor and don?t move on to the next one until you have found the one you?ve selected. There are times when you may reach a dead end, but our Free Insider?s Guide ? The Basics of Tracing Family Genealogy can help you to overcome them.

5. Begin Your Search Online
An online search can help you to find out if there are records of your ancestor somewhere; you may even be able to view some of them from the comfort of your own home on your PC. You can search huge databases on many websites, and many are completely FREE! We have recently updated our database, and now have links to 82 Absolutely Free Genealogy Resources and Records you can begin with.

6. Visit Your Local Library
You don?t want to limit your research to online sources; in fact you can?t complete your family history without visiting brick and mortar institutions. One such valuable genealogical repository is your local or state library. Many local libraries are tied into the database of the state or national libraries, and many have subscriptions to the large commercial genealogy websites which you can use if you?re a member. The US Government maintains a large online database of Government and Public Libraries in the United States while Collections Canada has a similar listing for Canadian libraries. Libraries for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales can be found at the UK Public Libraries website.

7. Visit Your Local Family History Center
The LDS Church (Latter-day Saints) has established more than 4,000 Family History Centers around the world, containing the largest genealogical database in existence. Their Online Directory can help you to find the Center nearest you.

8. Copy and Study Genealogical Documents
When you find a record of your ancestor at a library, family history center or online, you?ll want to make or download a copy of it so that you can examine it closely for clues to other ancestors, confirm the existing facts you have, and to preserve it for future use. Locate and make copies of as many birth, death, marriage, and baptism certificates as you can, and then you?ll need to update your Family Tree.

9. Update Your Family Tree
The new information you find will help you to full in those spaces in the family tree chart you began in Step 3. You may need to move on to a bigger chart, but whatever you do, don?t throw away the one you started, Transfer the information from that chart onto your new one, and file it in a folder along with any photos or copies of documents you may have for the ancestors included in it. You may need to refer to that chart again, or make copies of it to give to other relatives who might be interested in your family history.

10. Broaden Your Horizons
As you?re compiling information on your ancestors, you will begin to develop a personal interest in them, or curiosity about them. You might like to visit the land they immigrated from, or the village where they used to live. You will begin to learn of other sources like court records and church records, and may need to visit the repositories at which they are held. This is the stage when you?ll begin to realize just how much fun genealogy can be. As you develop your family tree, you?ll realize that research is not just about gathering facts, but about getting to know your ancestors as people. There?s no better excuse to go for a pint of Guinness in the pub in Ireland your ancestor used to love! You never know, you might meet someone who knew them!

Wake up America: Germany Finance Minister To Obama: Quit Giving ...

By Susan Duclos

It takes quite a bit of arrogance for Barack Obama to attempt to give deficit advice to other countries when he is presiding over America's highest deficit under his term in office than at any other time.? Germany's finance Minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, is calling Obama out on that arrogance.

Via AP:

Germany's finance minister is rejecting U.S. President Barack Obama's calls on Europe to move faster in fighting its debt crisis, telling him to get the American deficit under control instead.

Wolfgang Schaeuble told public broadcaster ZDF in an interview late Sunday that "people are always very quick at giving others advice."

He says: "Mr. Obama should first of all take care of reducing the American deficit, which is higher than in the eurozone."

About time another country publicly tells Obama to stop giving them advice to follow him over the debt cliff by pushing for policies that have failed to bring America's deficit under control and has made it worse.

Job Hunting Success ? Three Job Application Methods | The ...

Alright, it?s Monday again, and for all of you who are seeking a job (or trying to find a better job) like me, that means it?s time for another look at how to get your job hunt on. We?ve looked at how to build resumes for your hunt and some of the preparations for your job hunt, now it?s time for the real hunt to begin, finding a method of applying for jobs that works the best.

As you might guess, there?s more than a few methods to consider when applying for jobs. Gather up ten sources for job hunting advice, and you?re probably going to find a half dozen different recommendations for how to go about your job applying methods. Figuring out which one is the best is a fairly tough task. How do you determine the best job hunting method out there, given the number of types that exist?

Helpful hint: Don?t take the ?hunting? in job hunting too literally?

Here?s my advice: don?t try to use just one method. There?s a variety of jobs out there, after all; some are just perfect for you, some are less appealing, and some might be just barely better for you than being unemployed. For so many different jobs, there are numerous different techniques you can try. Let?s look at three of them, covering their advantages, disadvantages, and of course, when to use each different method.

Job Application Methods

Method Name: The Blanket Method

Details: If you?ve spent much time on job application sites like Monster and CareerBuilder, you?ve likely noticed that they make it very easy to apply for a job. Simply click on a job listing, click the ?Apply? button, choose which resume you want to submit (you can usually keep several saved), and viola! You?re done!

Pros: Quick and easy; you can get dozens of job applications submitted in an hour or two. Some job sites have been making this even easier, allowing you to simply click a check box next to each job in which you are interested and send your resume to all of them in fell swoop. In this method, you can typically cover hundreds of jobs during a single lunch hour. (Make sure you aren?t using a company computer while you do this, though.)

Cons: As you might guess, a method that basically flings everything at the wall to see what sticks will have a low response rate (one to two percent, if you?re lucky). Depending on how closely you watch the jobs to which you apply, you might end up getting responses about jobs you?d never consider taking.

Best Used For: The vast bulk of jobs you come across on most job sites. Chances are that if you?ve set your search parameters fairly broadly (to make sure nothing slips through the cracks) that you?ll get tons of job opportunities that simply aren?t a good fit. Double check the qualifications to ensure that they really aren?t something you are too impressed with, and if you still want to be considered (if you are unemployed or working part-time somewhere like Wal-Mart), you can use the Blanket Method to get yourself under consideration.

Method Name: The Standard Method

Details: Here?s the method you?ve most likely heard about (with some variations) from your job hunting sources. You find an interesting-sounding job that meets most of your qualifications, such as location, payment level, skills required, type of company, etc. You double-check that your resume stresses the qualifications the job requires, fill out an application form (if provided) that stresses the requirements of the particular company, and send everything in, usually through an online job entry. Depending on the company and the application method, you might also have the opportunity to include a cover letter; this is definitely a good idea, as it shows at least a decent level of interest in the company. Then, you basically just wait, perhaps sending a follow-up note a week or so later to see how the job-filling process is going.

Pros: As you might guess from how often it?s recommended, it?s a fairly common technique. You will generally get a decent response from some companies (about five to ten percent, based on my experiences, will contact you back). Depending on the length of the relevant application forms, you can typically get two or three such applications done in an hour of job-applying.

Cons: You?ll have to spend more time for each application than The Blanket Method, with fewer responses per application than The Personal Approach. As the most commonly recommended application method, you?re more likely to blend in with the crowd. Filling out application forms, many of which start to blend together, can make for a very boring application period.

Best Used For: Jobs you?re interested in, but not absolutely in love with. As you search through job offers, you?ll likely come across some that sound extra appealing, and that?s the time to break out some of the methods discussed here. You?ll get much more consideration than using the Blanket Approach, but not as much as if you use?

Method Name: The Personal Approach

Details: This one takes some effort (and usually some flexibility in how you approach it). It starts by looking up one (or more) companies you?d be interested in working for, and trying to find out as much as possible about them. Then, you want get in touch with someone in power (not merely the HR department) at the company, preferably in a creative way that shows your enthusiasm for the company. Personal letters to the higher-ups (particularly when they are rarely contacted) can work, as can unique packages that demonstrate your knowledge of the company and your sense of wit/humor. You aren?t trying to apply immediately, per se, but just get your foot in the door and get attention from someone in power, whom you can then provide with your resume and other information to continue the job application process proper. (Basically, the sort of method detailed in How to Land Your Dream Job.)

Pros: You can really stand out from the crowd with this sort of method, which enables you to demonstrate your creativity and zeal for the job in one fell swoop. (You can also avoid the HR department entirely with your application, not bad for those who have skills that Human Resources just doesn?t appreciate.) Depending on just how you submit your initial interest, you can get very high levels of responses and sometimes even direct offers (although that?s exceedingly rare).

Cons: As you might guess, the level of time required for this method is much, much higher than any of the others covered so far. If you aren?t ready to spend a day or two (or even more) finding out as much as possible about your potential target, this isn?t the method for you. It can also prove impossible for some companies, as they don?t provide any contact information other than the official application procedures.

Best Used For: Your dream job. If there is a job (or company) that you really, really, REALLY want (or want to work for), and are willing to put plenty of time and research into getting it, this is one of the ways to maximize your consideration.

These are far from the only methods to consider; as mentioned, there are almost as many job application techniques to try as there are job application advisers (close to as many as there are jobs, it seems sometimes), so you can undoubtedly find other methods to try. Of course, if nothing works, there are further techniques to consider if you want to try something less orthodox. But that?s a topic for next week?

How would you change

You can strap the GoPro HD Hero 2 to any number of things to document your extreme adventures in high definition. However, for all of the improvements in the second version, we found it to be distractingly heavy, difficult to mount and with audio that left plenty to the imagination. Still, a few days of testing, even with some aerial combat thrown in, can't match constant use over the last six months. So, why not tell us how you've found using this thing on a daily basis and if you could, what would you change about it?
