Another Yoda statue, Calif. Star Wars fans may get

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. (AP) ? Star Wars fans might soon have another Yoda statue in the San Francisco Bay area to visit.

Filmmaker George Lucas plans to help build a small park in Marin County that would feature a bronze sculpture of the popular Star Wars character, along with one of Indiana Jones.

Lucas' estate manager, Sarita Patel, said the Yoda statue would be similar to one in San Francisco's Presidio neighborhood. That one ? a full-sized replica of the Jedi sage ? lies atop a fountain outside an arts center where Lucas moved most of his operations in 2005. It has become a big draw for fans.

Lucas applied for a permit Wednesday to demolish a building on the site of the planned park in San Anselmo, the town where he lives, the Marin Independent Journal reported (http://bit.ly/YsKH3u)

He announced over the summer that he planned to donate the land where the building sits to the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce, and donate the statues for the proposed park. Lucas has since also agreed to pay for the building's demolition.

The chamber hopes to raise $150,000 to $200,000 to create the park.

San Anselmo Town Manager Debra Stutsman said the demolition application, which includes a historical analysis of the building, will be reviewed by the town's Planning Commission and Historical Commission.

The building, as well as a fresco inside, date back to 1945.

Patel said Lucas plans to donate the fresco to the Spanish consulate in San Francisco.

Lucas built his film operation in Marin County and had planned to put up a palatial new digital media production studio there. But he abandoned those plans earlier this year in the face of opposition from neighbors and what he said were delays in the approval process.

German unemployment drops slightly in November

BERLIN (AP) ? Official figures show the number of Germans unemployed ticked down slightly in November, even though growth in Europe's largest economy is coming off the boil.

Labor Agency head Frank Weise says Thursday the numbers show the job market in Germany remains "robust."

Overall, 2.751 million people were out of work in November, down 2,000 from October. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.5 percent.

When adjusted for seasonal factors the number of jobless increased slightly, leaving the rate at 6.9 percent.

ING economist Carsten Brzeski says the German labor market appears to be "gradually losing steam," but that the slowdown may be "gradual" and "short-lived" if the external environment improves quickly.

German growth has moderated as many of the country's euro partners struggle in the face of their big debts.

Large Hadron Collider may have produced a previously undetected form of matter

Large Hadron Collider may have produced previously unconfirmed form of matter

Teams at the Large Hadron Collider must be developing a knack for producing tangible evidence of theoretical particles. After orchestrating 2 million collisions between lead nuclei and protons, like the sort you see above, the collider's Compact Muon Solenoid group and researchers at MIT suspect that stray, linked pairs of gluon particles in the mix were signs of color-glass condensate, a currently theory-only form of matter that sees gluons travel in liquid-like, quantum-entangled waves. The clues aren't definitive, but they were also caught unexpectedly as part of a more routine collision run; the team is curious enough that it's looking for more evidence during weeks of similar tests in January. Any conclusive proof of the condensate would have an impact both on how we understand particle production in collisions as well as the ways gluons and quarks are arranged inside protons. If so, the CMS and MIT teams may well answer a raft of questions about subatomic physics while further justifying CERN's giant underground rings.

It's all about your USERS when it comes to Unified Communications ...

Darryl Wilson | Area Practice Manager | Dimension Data Canada

There is no doubt that Unified Communications & Collaboration (UC&C) solutions have crossed the chasm to mass adoption.? Most, if not all, vendors and manufacturers in the marketplace have flooded the industry with products and solutions that speak to UC&C, and the market continues to demand it. We live in a global economy where people collaborate across regional, functional and country borders each and every day.? ?Over the past 10 years, we?ve seen clients traditionally starting with either ?voice over IP (VoIP) enabling? their PBXs for toll-bypass savings on long distance or having deployed IP telephony solutions (voice being transmitted on a converged data network) to cut communications costs.

These days, collaboration is much more than VoIP. Collaboration is now seen as something we ?do? (a human process) not something we ?use?. True collaboration enables a level of engagement, intimacy and trust not possible through traditional communications channels. If created and implemented properly, UC&C technology can enable true collaboration with peers, clients and partners, through technologies such as unified messaging, instant messaging, presence, desktop and application sharing and video conferencing.

It is imperative for any UC&C strategy to be designed with true collaboration in mind. In order for your business to be competitive in the marketplace and to attract and retain new talent, your UC&C strategy needs to be carefully structured and implemented to ensure adoption, therefore yielding the highest return on investment.

Putting the user at the centre of your UC&C strategy is critical and requires a deep understanding of the various user classes in your organisation. Traditionally, tools and applications used by the employees have been dictated based on device type.?? For UC&C and mobility to be adopted, we believe it should be ?User Centric? approach.? Prior to architecting or implementing a UC&C solution, one must segment the user base into various classes based on the user?s requirements. For example, some users remain within a single facility (eg the office) throughout the workday.? They are not mobile and they need tools and solutions at their workspace.? On the opposite side of the spectrum, you may have other users that are highly mobile.? Mobile workers require applications and tools on a variety of devices including laptops, smart phones and tablets.? Finally, you may have executives that require all of the above.? Each of these various user classes will require different tools and communication device options to be productive in their respective job functions. This will affect the way you license the UC&C solution as mobility or multiple device options likely require different licensing approaches. It is therefore critical to classify these users in advance to ensure the optimal blend of licenses. Using a ?one size fits all? mentality will in most cases not be the most cost effective approach.

Once the understanding of the user community is in place, the proper training and adoption programs, and support strategies coupled with the correct technology solution can be implemented.

Focusing on the user as you define your UC&C strategy will ensure you take advantage of the proper solutions and tools for the appropriate users in your business, resulting in increased levels of productivity with the return on investment you are looking for.

Manchester City striker Tevez banned for speeding

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:48 a.m. ET Nov. 26, 2012

MORECAMBE, England (AP) -Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has been banned from driving for speeding.

Magistrates in the northern English town of Lancaster imposed the interim ban on Monday after he failed to provide identification when he was caught speeding in nearby Morecambe on March 28.

The Argentina international did not attend the hearing.

His solicitor Gwyn Lewis told the court that "my instructions are though (Tevez) was not the driver on that occasion I am not going to argue against a ban on grounds of exceptional hardship."

Separately, Tevez's Porsche Panamera was impounded in Manchester on Nov. 15 because he could not produce a full British driving license.

Two days later, Tevez mimicked driving a car after he scored twice in his team's Premier League win against Aston Villa.

Pioneer Foods earnings hit by empowerment costs

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African Pioneer Food Group posted a 17 percent drop in full-year earnings on Monday, hit by costs related to an empowerment transaction.

The group, which makes bread, breakfast cereal and juices, said headline earnings per share for the year to the end of September totaled 337 cents from 407 cents last year.

Headline earnings, the main profit gauge in South Africa, exclude certain one-off items.

Pioneer Foods said the earnings were impacted by a charge of 161 million rand, relating to the implementation of the second phase of a broad based black economic empowerment transaction.

It said revenue rose 10 percent to 18.6 billion rand.

The company's shares are down 3 percent so far this year, compared with an 18 percent rise in the broader All-share Index.

Investor sues HP over Autonomy deal

2 hrs.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hewlett-Packard was sued on Monday by an investor who claimed the company knew statements about its Autonomy acquisition were misleading and led the stock to fall, according to lawyers representing the plaintiff.

The proposed class action lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco federal court.

HP dropped a bombshell last Tuesday with an $8.8 billion write-down on its acquisition of British software firm Autonomy, saying the company inflated sales with improper accounting. Autonomy co-founder Mike Lynch has denied any wrongdoing.

HP bought Autonomy for a hefty $11.1 billion last year. HP has said it alerted regulators on both sides of the Atlantic.

The lawsuit, one of the first to be filed by investors on the Autonomy mess, said HP hid the fact it gained control of Autonomy based on financial statements that could not be relied upon. It also said that HP had not revealed to investors that it tried to undo the Autonomy agreement before it closed because of the accounting issues.?

The Ultimate Bowling Guide : Sports and Recreation ... - Gotted75's ...

You are here: Home / General / The Ultimate Bowling Guide

The Ultimate Bowling GuideThe good news is, there are a few simple "tweaks" any bowler can use to instantly tack on 20, 30, even 50 or more points a game. And it doesn?t take that much effort.

There are five "dirty little secrets" among professional bowlers? secrets that no amateur ever learns on their own? and the pro?s like it that way.

These five "dirty little secrets" are extremely simple to master (once they are revealed to you)? and yet they INSTANTLY allow you (no matter how butt ugly you think your game is right now) to "lock into" your own personal "Perfect Shot". Which means on your very next game, you will:

How can this be? How can you not transform your game? and suddenly ? and I do mean SUDDENLY ? start playing like the top pro?s at their peak?

You see? you ALREADY have the goods when it comes to bowling the best game you?re capable of? just not WHEN IT COUNTS.

You heard right. You?re "blowing your wad" on your PRACTICE THROWS, if you?re like 99% of the amateur bowlers in the world. And you?re leaving your best game behind. And going out on the lanes with the WORST game you have.

If you?re like most bowlers, you like to warm up with a few frames before you start a game, right? At the very least, you get to the lanes every once in a while to "practice". Everyone who takes their game seriously does this. I know I do.

But the pro?s do something DIFFERENT than you do. Unlike you (and every other amateur in the world)?

The Pro Knows How To "Capture" His Best Shot During The Warm-Up? And Bring It With Him To The Game!

Amateurs, on the other hand, LEAVE their best shot behind. Let me explain: There you are on your lane, warming up and testing the lane conditions, launching a fairly-decent hook, getting a strike here and there, maybe missing an occasional spare, setting up again and correcting your lift, launching another pretty damn good shot?

"Locked" That Breathtaking Shot Into His Body, Where He Could Bring It Back At Will, In The Game Where It Would Count The Most!

You, however, blow right past the few perfect shots you throw practicing, not storing them at all, and thus you can?t find them when it counts. Those great shots you launch on the practice lane are lost forever. Even more depressing? there?s a 90% chance the shots you do throw in the game will be among your WORST! Because, you?ve done EVERYTHING WRONG at the warm-up.

And what?s really frustrating is you don?t even know you?re doing it? because these five little secrets are NEVER discovered by amateurs! They?re the secrets that separate the guys who can make a living off the game, and everyone else who can?t buy a break.

And? just like most things that are so simple they get completely overlooked? no one has really understood how these secrets?

How To Stay Pure Until Marriage - Incite Faith

I?m a virgin.?An?imperfect one.

I?ve made mistakes in my past and mistakes I still think about even now. I wasn?t always pure in my actions and I paid for them. Being a virgin is a choice for me. It?s a choice I?ve upheld since 17. I made a commitment. A vow to myself and?my body?that I wouldn?t give it away to any one unless I was married.

Yes, I?ve been in relationships and there was a lot of pressure in those relationships to??give in?.?It wasn?t the reason we ended our relationship but it started a downward spiral that inevitably ended it. Something always told me to wait.?And I?ve waited.?The ride to here hasn?t been easy. Words like ?prude? and ?uptight? have been spread around over the course of my life. I remember brief conversations with men who I were interested in who told me I would never find a man because I wouldn?t??give it up.?

Words that engraved themselves in my memory, reminding me ?this was a commitment I intended carrying and nothing any one said was going to change it.

Here I am 29,?still?a virgin, and everyday I am learning more about what I want,?don?t?want, and have more questions about sex and marriage than I have in my entire life. Being more intimate with God has helped guide me in understanding my body and?it?s purpose.?It?s a covenant between God and I that shouldn?t be broken.

So, how have I been able to do it? I?ve been asked how and why by people close to me and my response has always changed. And it?s because I?ve changed.?I?m changing now.?God is making all things new everyday and the more I learn who I am, and what I want, I understand why I?m still a virgin.

For me I?ve applied the following in my life to stay pure until marriage:

Create REALISTIC and healthy boundaries in relationships.

In my last official relationship we didn?t have boundaries. He knew I was a virgin and wanted to stay one until marriage. However, because we did ?other things?, his expectations grew and my commitment to remain a virgin was sending mixed signals. I take full responsibility for it and it taught me an important lesson. I made the decision after our relationship was over to create healthy boundaries early on so there is no confusion later. Healthy boundaries for me are: Understanding what makes me comfortable/uncomfortable and knowing what?s appropriate/inappropriate. I realize this can be different for everyone. So, let me clarify.?Kissing is?OKAY.?Hugging and cuddling are?OKAY.?Being affectionate with each other is?OKAY.?These are acceptable for me because I?m naturally an affectionate person and have self-control.

So, what?s?NOT?okay?

That depends on you. Everyone is different. You know your body. You know what you want. So, I am not going to preach to you about what is acceptable and appropriate behavior for?you.?What I will ask though is:?If God was in the room with you, would He approve of the behavior you and your significant other choose to entertain in outside the context of marriage?

Understand sex in the context of marriage.

Honestly, this has been a huge help for me to stay pure before marriage.?Sex in the context of marriage is beautiful.?Maybe it?s the girl in me, but the more I read and learn about sex, the more I want it,?but I want it differently.?I want it with my future husband.?Right now I am reading??Sex God??by Rob Bell and it?s an amazing book that explores this topic. The sexual bond between a man and woman is central to what it means to be married.?And it?s so much deeper than what our culture paints it.?

Respect your body.

Respect the person God made you to be.?Our bodies are His and every piece is beautiful in its creation. It?s sacred. I haven?t always respected my body and I often look back on those moments when I didn?t and I?m disgusted.?Sometimes I?m ashamed.?My flesh has failed several times in my life and it?s a daily struggle. Lust has had a grip so tight over my life and body for as long as I can remember. But I know what I want and I?m not settling for less than that.?Your body,?our bodies, are temples where His spirit dwells and every day I remind myself to sow in the spirit, not the flesh.

?It?s easy to take off your clothes and have sex. People do it all the time. But opening up your soul to someone, letting them into your spirit and thoughts, fears, future, hopes, and dreams, that is being naked. This is why when people sleep together after they?ve just met, they?re raising the chances significantly that the relationship will not survive. Racing ahead of the progression always costs something. Too much too fast rarely endures.?

I want sex,?I crave it, but I want sex with the man God has chosen for me. If that makes me a prude, so be it. I?m not in this world to please any one and neither are you. Each and everyone of you know your body and inevitably what you want. We have desires. ?And it?s okay. ?It?s normal.

God gave us our desires, but make sure your desire to pursue Him isn?t placed on the back burner for momentary pleasure.?

?Your strength is a beautiful thing. And when you live in it, when you carry yourself with the honor and dignity that are yours, it forces the men around you to relate to you on more than just a flesh level. You are worth dying for.

If you?re a virgin, what has been the hardest struggle for you?

If you?re married, how did your perspective about sex change after marriage?

Pastors prey on married women - NewsDay Zimbabwe

Pastors are flock leaders who command respect among their followers and they should guide their flock into a moral lifestyle that reflects a divine calling.

Men of cloth possess a charismatic ability to influence their followers? personal decisions in life since they are regarded as father figures.

But it seems most of these respected men of cloth are
abusing the holy office as they end up having relationships with women from their churches.

The media is awash with reports of pastors impregnating church members and some getting caught pants down.

The well known is the recent case of a Marondera Pentecostal pastor who dated a number of women on Facebook. The pastor was reportedly being intimate with most of them all in the name of divine intervention and counselling.

A number of pastors and prophets have contributed much to the breaking of many marriages as they prey on married women from their conregation seeking assistance.

One wonders why this kind of intimate relationship is ignited given the trust every Christian gives to a pastor.

In an interview, a Harare woman, Tariro Makamba, said women needed people who listened to them, adding that most male pastors usually preyed on such women.

?I don?t know of anyone who really wants to have a failed marriage. Even though there are plenty of women who get involved with other men, it isn?t because they want to have an affair and ruin their marriage.?

?They would rather have their marriage work the way they
envisioned it. Often they go to pastors because they believe their husbands are not listening to them.?

?What the woman really wants is for her husband to listen to her and pastors have this characteristic. So if the pastor makes a slight move, the husband is done. It?s easy to seduce a woman who has problems.? she said.

Sarah Nyambiya (43), a Pentecostal, echoed the same sentiments.
?Those problems will come with her. When she tells him what a jerk her husband is, she is gone.

?The women who don?t have problems, who are committed to their marriage and are happy with their husbands, will not budge to seductive moves by the pastors,? she said.

According to sociologist Darlington Nyabiko, most relationships between pastors and church women emanate from the latter being easily attracted to men of cloth.

Nyabiko said women need status and they are attracted to
those of a higher status than their husbands.

?Many women value style over substance. If you look good, then you must be good. Most pastors are good looking. I am surprised at how superficial traits are valued more than more meaningful factors, like the content of a man?s character, ? said Nyabiko

?Another reason is many women falsely believe that men who go to church are better than men who don?t. And women love men who go to church.?

?Unfortunately, people consider each case of a pastor
doing dirt to be an exception to the rule, without realising that there are men like fake pastors all over the country,? he said.

However, a pastor who spoke to Newsday described men of cloth who venture into relationships with church women as messengers of the devil.

?Those pastors are wolves in sheep skin. Instead of guarding the flock, they devour. They are enemies of the word,? said Pastor Tonderai Mungani of Holy Spirit Ministries.

The Flip Side of a Weaker Currency - Chicago Gold and Silver ...

A reason why some countries choose to weaken (devalue their currency) is that now their goods become cheaper to foreign countries whose currencies have become stronger. They are now able to buy more of your goods at a cheaper price. Because they can buy at a cheaper price, they buy more and the countries exports to foreign countries increase and thus helping the local economy.? Also, if the national government is heavily indebted, the government can pay off its debt using money which they have more of.

That is the theory any way. But it is not that easy. What about the business who imports more foreign goods than they export? For example Wal-Mart. They purchase so much goods from China that they now resell at their retail establishments in the states. With a weaker dollar, the price of those goods costs more now. Wal-Mart suffers and it's retail buyers suffer from having to pay higher prices.

So the flip side of a weaker currency is that its citizens have to pay more for goods from foreign countries. Devlauation is in essence a tax to its citizens in the form of higher prices.

Currency devaluation has happened recently in Belarus and in Switzerland. The US devalues it's currency every month with QE3. As more countries choose to devalue, a wiser place to put their currency may be in real money such as gold and silver.

Is there anything wrong with this?

You say you're 28 when your age says 29-35...but I doubt that was your question. There's nothing wrong with it from what i understand, that was actually a question on "crazy or not" and the psychologist said its not crazy. In fact, he went on to expand, that becoming a person that doesn't even like anybody is not crazy...just a reflection of experiences and perfectly normal healthy adults can no longer desire social interraction. To manage your family, deflect and ask them "why is something wrong with you or is something that I don't know about going on? Im sorry, I've been so focused on getting myself back on track I hope I didn't miss something in your life"

Calif. city plans to provide transgender surgeries

(AP) ? San Francisco is preparing to become the first U.S. city to provide and cover the cost of sex reassignment surgeries for uninsured transgender residents.

The city's Health Commission voted Tuesday to create a comprehensive program for treating transgender people experiencing mental distress because of the mismatch between their bodies and their gender identities. San Francisco already provides transgender residents with hormones, counseling and routine health services, but has stopped short of offering surgical interventions, Public Health Director Barbara Garcia said Thursday after the vote was announced.

The idea for a new program that included surgeries came out of conversations between public health officials and transgender rights advocates who wanted mastectomies, genital reconstructions and other surgeries that are recommended for some transgender people covered under San Francisco's 5-year-old universal health care plan.

At the urging of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the San Francisco-based Transgender Law Center, the commission agreed this week to drop sex reassignment surgery from the list of procedures specifically excluded from the Healthy San Francisco plan.

But Garcia described the move as "a symbolic process" for now because the city currently does not have the expertise, capacity or protocols in place to provide the surgeries through its clinics and public hospital.

"The community felt the exclusion on Healthy San Francisco was discriminatory and we wanted to change that as the first step," she said.

Instead of expanding the existing plan, the Health Commission approved the establishment of a separate program that covers all aspects of transgender health, including gender transition. Garcia hopes to have it running by late next year, but said her department first needs to study how many people it would serve, how much it would cost, who would perform the surgeries and where they would be performed.

"Sex reassignment surgery is not the end all. It's one service that some transgender people want and some don't," she said. "We can probably manage this over the next three years without much of a budget increase because we already have these (other) services covered."

San Francisco in 2001 became the first city in the country to cover sex reassignment surgeries for government employees. Last year, Portland, Ore. did the same. The number of major U.S. companies covering the cost of gender reassignment surgery for transgender workers also doubled last year, reflecting a decades-long push by transgender activists to get insurance companies to treat such surgeries as medically necessary instead of elective procedures.

Kathryn Steuerman, a member of a transgender health advocacy group in San Francisco, said the city's latest move would help residents avoid going into debt to finance operations related to gender transition, as she did.

"I am filled with hope and gratitude that we are achieving this level of support for the well-being of the transgender community," Steuerman said.

Judge rejects injunction against Dish DVR

(AP) ? A California judge has rejected a request for a preliminary injunction against Dish Network's ad-skipping digital video recorder in a dispute that has pit broadcasters against a main distributor of their programming.

Judge Dolly Gee of the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Monday struck down the request by News Corp. broadcaster Fox, according to a statement from Dish. A Fox spokesman confirmed the ruling but said the network would appeal.

The ruling was not released publically.

Dish Network Corp. and the broadcast networks have been at odds over a new digital video recorder called the Hopper, which allows consumers to record prime-time programming from the four broadcast networks ? ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox ? and play the video back the next day with the commercials stripped out.

Gee determined that Fox was unlikely to be able to prove that it has suffered irreparable harm from the copies Dish made as a way to back up recordings on consumers' DVRs, Dish said.

Dish's general counsel, R. Stanton Dodge, called the ruling "a victory for common sense and customer choice."

Fox said in a statement said it was "gratified" that the judge found that Dish's copies infringed on its copyright and breached their contract. But it disagreed that making the copies did not cause irreparable harm.

"Dish is marketing and benefitting from an unauthorized (video on demand) service that illegally copies Fox's valuable programming," Fox said in a statement.

The broadcasters argue that automated ad-skipping would deprive them of needed ad revenue, while Dish argues its new device just makes it easier to do what consumers do already on their own DVRs: record shows and skip through ads on playback.

Rochester, MN, November 9, 2012 Axillary lymph node dissection is done in conjunction with lumpectomy or mastectomy to determine if breast cancer has spread to the adjoining lymph nodes. The conventional surgical approach leaves a surgical scar that is unattractive and can restrict range of motion in the shoulder joint. Also, squeezing and pulling the tumor during the breast operation can stimulate tumor cell metastases. A new study in the December issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings reports that an endoscopic technique, mastoscopic axillary lymph node dissection (MALND), can reduce these complications.

"Patients who undergo MALND experience improved operative outcomes, fewer complications, better functional conservation, and more attractive cosmetic results," says lead investigator Chengyu Luo, MD, of Fuxing Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China. "When performed by a well-trained surgeon, it is the treatment of choice."

1027 patients with operable breast cancer were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. The first group underwent a breast operation and axillary lymph node dissection by conventional surgical means (CALND). The second group first underwent MALND and then conventional breast surgery. Both groups were treated post-operatively with systemic therapy and radiation therapy. The patients were followed for 63 months.

The average blood loss in the MALND group was lower than that in the CALND group. There was no significant difference between the two groups with respect to operative time. The patients who underwent MALND had less axillary pain, numbness, paresthesias and arm swelling. The aesthetic appearance of the axilla was much better in the MALND group than in the CALND group.

No statistically significant difference in disease free survival or overall survival between the two groups was observed. However, there was a significant difference between the two groups in the distant metastasis rate in favor of the MALND group. "This is the most significant finding of the study," says Dr. Luo. "While there is not as yet any significant difference in survival, longer term follow-up (e.g., 10 years and 20 years) is still needed to make a definitive conclusion. This may suggest that the axillary operation should be done before the breast operation even in conventional surgery."

(AP) ? Roadside bombs and a suicide bomber killed 20 people in a spate of attacks across Afghanistan on Thursday, officials said.

The deaths came even as armed clashes between insurgents and Afghan security forces have decreased as the fighting season winds down with the advent of cooler weather in the mountainous nation.

In one of the attacks, 10 civilians, including a child and four men, died as their vehicle struck a land mine in southern Helmand province. Seven other people in the group ? which was heading to a wedding ? were wounded in the blast, said Ismail Khan Hotak of the provincial security coordination center.

A suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up amid a police patrol in the southern city of Kandahar, killing the three policemen and wounding two, said Ahmad Jawed Faisal, a provincial governor spokesman.

And five troops died when their convoy hit a land mine in eastern Laghman province, according to Sarhadi Zewak, also a governor spokesman.

Also Thursday, two boys were killed by a roadside bomb in Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. Deputy provincial chief Ghulam Gilani Farahi said the device had probably been planted by insurgents targeting police officers patrolling the area.

Insurgents have been increasingly targeting Afghan authorities and security forces now that NATO is drawing down toward a final withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

Although the Afghan police and army have expanded rapidly to their planned strength of 352,000 members, they are plagued with low morale and a high desertion rate.

Meanwhile, the spate of so-called insider attacks by members of Afghan security forces against foreign troops and their own colleagues has undermined trust between international forces and the Afghan army and police.

Last month, the U.N. mission in Afghanistan urged the insurgents to end the use of roadside bombs, also known as improvised explosive devices or IEDs, saying they were by far the biggest killer of civilians in the conflict. The organization used the term in reference both to bombs detonated by remote control and land mines that go off when a vehicle goes over them.

But the Taliban rejected the assertion that their bombs were causing civilian casualties. Spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid later said the insurgents only use remote-controlled roadside bombs, which allow a bomber to choose the time of the blast and specifically target coalition troops and their Afghan allies ? unlike devices that are planted and activated by pressure, from a car, for example.

Tea Party still has clout despite election setbacks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tea Party candidates may have spoiled Republican chances of taking control of the U.S. Senate, but the small-government movement will continue to hold sway in Washington for at least the next few years on fiscal - if not social - issues, experts said on Wednesday.

If not for the poor performance of some Tea Party-backed Senate candidates in both the 2012 and 2010 elections, Republicans could have been in the majority in the chamber. Instead, much to Republicans' dismay, Democrats have actually become stronger.

The ground is strewn with the bodies of failed Tea Party candidates in states where Democrats otherwise would have been sent to their own political graves: Todd Akin in Missouri and Richard Mourdock in Indiana in 2012; Sharron Angle in Nevada and Christine O'Donnell in Delaware in 2010, to name a few.

Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, the head of the Tea Party Caucus - Michelle Bachmann - appears to have just barely dodged defeat on Tuesday, while colleagues including Allen West and Joe Walsh were not as fortunate.

"The Tea Party is over," crowed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

That conclusion could be premature, as Republicans are showing every sign of hanging tough in their drive to keep taxes low, including for the wealthy, and to limit government spending - central philosophies they share with the Tea Party movement.

The top U.S. Republican, House Speaker John Boehner, said as much on Tuesday night, when he proclaimed that Obama had no mandate to raise taxes on the rich, even though the president had scored a solid re-election victory and Democrats increased their membership in the Senate.

Boehner put Democrats on notice after Republicans, who won the House in 2010 thanks to big Tea Party victories, retained power in the chamber.

And so when it comes to budget and tax issues, Republican leaders in Congress may have to continue answering Tea Party demands.

"Boehner still needs to keep his back to the wall on these folks," said Stephen Hess, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who follows Congress.

Ron Bonjean, a former top aide to House and Senate Republican leaders, added, "If you're Speaker, you are going to take the hardest line possible that reflects the Republican conference. And it's unlikely you budge from that position unless President Obama comes your way with concessions."

Hess also noted that Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who faces re-election in 2014, must be on the watch for primary-season challenges from the Tea Party, along with Senator Lindsey Graham. The same goes for Senators Saxby Chambliss and Lamar Alexander, according to other political analysts.

And so, Hess said, Republicans like McConnell and Graham still have to court the Tea Party, much like Senator Orrin Hatch successfully did the past two years. Conversely, Senator Richard Lugar - soon to be former Senator Richard Lugar - found that ignoring Tea Party forces can be perilous.

A House Republican aide predicted that Boehner's warning against letting income taxes rise on the rich was not just an opening line in upcoming "fiscal cliff" negotiations with Democrats. "It's his bottom line," the aide added.

While Boehner easily won re-election on Tuesday night to his House seat, he still has to run in January for re-election as Speaker. And so he might want to limit the number of tough votes he forces fellow Republicans to cast on taxes and spending before that leadership election.

Next week, however, Republicans will elect other mid-level party leaders, which could demonstrate the reach of the Tea Party.

Tea Party activist Tom Price is vying against Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a Boehner protege who at times has been more of a centrist than Price.

TEA PARTY OBITUARY?

For all the attention Tea Party activists got last year, when they nearly brought the federal government to a grinding halt during a struggle with Democrats over the budget deficit and federal debt, and for all the muscle-flexing they continue to do, Hess said the loosely knit group's years are numbered.

As the U.S. economy grows healthier, Hess said that this political movement - born out of panic and anger over the deepest recession since the Great Depression - will become increasingly more irrelevant.

He envisioned an Internet obituary for the Tea Party that would read something like this: "A group of people who had an impact on the Republican Party in an organized sense between 2010 and 2016."

But for the time being, the Tea Party, despite its foibles, has played and continues to play a constructive role for Republicans, Bonjean said.

"The Tea Party has pulled Washington as a whole to their (Republican) side of the field by demanding more fiscal responsibility. They forced the president to the table on budget negotiations," Bonjean said.

Social issues are another matter, though, with Republicans apparently gaining little advantage when the Tea Party wades into abortion, immigration or other hot-button matters.

Akin's Senate bid sunk after he talked about "legitimate rape" this summer, while Mourdock faded when he said that pregnancy after rape could be "something that God intended."

So if Democrats, as expected, begin pushing social issues next year, such as comprehensive immigration reform, analysts say that Republican leadership scrapes with the Tea Party could be on public view, especially as the party tries to figure out a way to begin appealing to a growing Hispanic population.
