Chelsea owner Abramovich faces $6 billion court ruling

LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich will find out on Friday whether he owes his former partner Boris Berezovsky as much as $6 billion (3.8 billion pounds) after a British court battle that has laid bare the post-Soviet carve-up of Russia's vast natural resources.

After a legal odyssey stretching from the gilded corridors of the Kremlin to the offshore enclaves favoured by Russia's richest tycoons, Judge Elizabeth Gloster will rule on whether Berezovsky was extorted out his business empire by Abramovich.

Berezovsky, a fast-talking former mathematician who became a Kremlin powerbroker under late President Boris Yeltsin only to fall foul of Vladimir Putin, says Abramovich used the threat of Kremlin retribution to intimidate him into selling out of Russia's fourth biggest oil company at a knockdown price.

Abramovich, the world's 68th richest man with a $12.1 billion fortune, denies that and says he merely paid Berezovsky money for political cover and protection - known in Russian bandit slang as "krysha" or "roof".

"I am a genetic optimist but I shall not say anything more until we see the verdict," Berezovsky told Reuters by telephone on Tuesday.

Judge Gloster will spend about an hour reading out a summary of the decision at the High Court's modern Rolls Building, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The final judgment will be published after September 17.

Abramovich spokesman John Mann declined to comment until the ruling was handed down, though either party could appeal in the case, which has cost tens of millions of pounds in legal fees.

Besides the personal drama of a public battle between two of Russia's most dazzling businessmen, one of the biggest private litigation cases in the world has detailed the treacherous business world of post-Soviet Russia:

Ownership means nothing, offshore cash is king and while Yeltsin granted favoured tycoons control over the oil and metals producers of a former superpower, President Putin can wrestle assets back from errant oligarchs no matter how powerful.

RUSSIAN KRYSHA

Complete with blatant tax evasion, informal deals on billion-dollar assets and a fly-on-the-wall view from inside the adrenaline bubble of Russia's A-team of oligarchs, the case reveals the country's heady corruption.

Even the evidence reads like a John le Carre thriller: barristers bickered over handwritten notes from an offshore lawyer who died in a mysterious helicopter crash, a snatched conversation on tax avoidance recorded in secret at Le Bourget airport and a meeting at London's Dorchester Hotel to hash out the creation of the world's biggest aluminium company.

"The most interesting part of it is the light it sheds on the way in which Russian business was done at that very high level in the immediate post-Communist period: This culture of krysha and payments being paid back and forward," said Philippa Charles, a litigation partner at law firm Mayer Brown, which is not directly involved in the case.

"Meetings at heliports, alpine ski resorts - it is all rather James Bond but actually it shows this was the reality of how business was done at that time in Russia," Charles said.

The focus of the case was 1995 - the year Yeltsin sold off the assets of a former superpower to a handful of influential traders who became known as the oligarchs.

Rich beyond the dreams of their often modest Soviet childhoods, the barons of Siberia came to personify the corruption of post-Soviet Russia: brash, dangerous alpha-males who scorned the rules of mortals.

After meeting on a Caribbean yacht trip organised by fellow tycoon Pyotr Aven, Berezovsky and Abramovich, then a 28-year-old oil trader, came up with a simple idea: merge Russia's best refinery with some of the top oil and gas fields of Siberia.

But to pull it off, they would need Yeltsin's support.

OLIGARCH BATTLES

Berezovsky said Abramovich agreed to give him and partner Badri Patarkatsishvili, a chain-smoking Georgian who died in Britain in 2008, a half share of what would become Sibneft to secure state approval for its creation and privatisation.

Abramovich disputes that, saying he merely paid Berezovsky for providing political cover and protection culminating in a final payment of $1.3 billion via a sheikh in 2001. Abramovich said Berezovsky did nothing to develop Sibneft.

"Krysha was required. It was impossible to keep hold of the company without krysha. So we required both political and physical krysha," Abramovich told the court.

After fleeing Putin's Russia in 2000, Berezovsky claims Abramovich sought to curry favour with Putin by threatening him with expropriation unless he sold his Sibneft stake to him.

Russia's state gas monopoly Gazprom bought Sibneft from Abramovich for $13 billion in 2005. Abramovich denies any threats were made.

Berezovsky also claimed Abramovich sold his shares in RUSAL Plc, the world's top aluminium producer, without his permission. He is seeking over $5 billion for his claimed losses over Sibneft and over $564 million for RUSAL.

"There is no suggestion that anyone forced or pressured Mr Abramovich into acting for the Kremlin," Berezovsky told the court. "He was simply happy to act to the detriment of his friend and partner in order to curry favour with President Putin."

Abramovich's lawyers cast Berezovsky as an obsessive man angry at the success of Abramovich who he believed enjoyed a similar level of clout with Putin -- Russia's paramount leader since December 31, 1999 -- as Berezovsky enjoyed with Yeltsin.

If after digesting the intricacies of Russian business practise, the judge rules against Berezovsky, his reputation as a publicity seeking former oligarch will be cemented.

But if Berezovsky wins, Putin will be cast as Russia's alpha-dog ruler whom even billionaire oligarchs such as Abramovich are so keen to please that they will betray their former partners.

The Ballsy Way Mitt Romney First Put The Moves ... - Business Insider

The world met Mitt Romney's wife Ann last night, when she gave a speech at the Republican National Convention.

The speech was an appeal to women.?In it, Romney spoke of meeting Mitt at a dance back when they were teenagers.

The truth is Mitt and Ann actually met when they were little kids. Mitt was in Cub Scouts and he saw Ann riding a horse. He threw some stones at her.

But, it is true that Mitt put much more effective moves on Ann at that dance.

He did it in a pretty ballsy way.

He was going to high school at a fancy, all-boys boarding school called Cranbrook and she was going to a fancy all-girls school called Kingswood. They had friends in common. One of them threw a dance party.

You might imagine that a story in which Mitt called up his crush from childhood and asked her to this dance, and that she was his date and that things took off from there.

    But that's not what happened.

Actually, Ann already had a date ? not Mitt.

He only saw her, remembered her, at the dance, when he spotted her across the room.

    So what did Mitt do?

Did he go over to Ann and chat her up? Remind her of old stones tossed?

    Nope.

Did he wait for her to recognize him and come over??

    No way.

He went straight for the gold.

He walked over to Ann's date and talked the guy into letting him drive her home.

    Talk about cutting in!

?I caught his eye and he never let me go,? Ann told an interviewer later.

?I mean, he hotly pursued me.?

We learned all this reading? The Real Romney, a deeply reported and informative book by Michael Kranish and Scott Helman.?You should read it if want to know about the guy whom half the country wants to be our next president.?Pre-order the up-coming, updated, paperback version here.?Or buy?the Kindle edition.

HBT: Carpenter hasn't ruled out return this season

Chris Carpenter underwent season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in July and at the time the big question was whether he?d be ready to contribute to the Cardinals next season.

Now it turns out the surgery may not have been ?season-ending? after all, because Carpenter has been throwing bullpen sessions recently in attempt to gauge his readiness for 2013 and ? well, he?s felt so good that returning this year is suddenly not impossible.

Carpenter threw a 40-pitch bullpen session yesterday, at which point Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch asked if he?d be able to pitch this season and the former Cy Young winner replied: ?I don?t know. Let?s see what happens.?

Hummel then told Mike Matheny about Carpenter?s response, to which the manager said: ?That?s a heckuva answer. We?ll see how he feels tomorrow. It was fun to watch today.?

It?s worth noting that the Cardinals aren?t exactly hurting for rotation depth and in fact just demoted Lance Lynn to the bullpen less than two months after he made the All-Star team as a starter. The odds are obviously stacked against Carpenter making any kind of major impact down the stretch, but then again he?s already made a mockery of the odds with this rapid comeback.

Education of Business Online from NCSU All About Videos ? Basic ...

Ever heard about ?sticky? websites? For an internet marketing beginner, this should be one of your goals ? to create a good website, one that attracts traffic and encourages them to stay and use links and functions provided on the site. Many internet marketers have discovered that one of the best ways to do this is to provide videos, particularly those that are industry-related. Videos are an excellent means to bring in traffic while at the same time, provide people with information they can truly use. For internet marketing beginners, this is good news. Not only can they learn from the best in the industry through these short movies, they can also use these resources to increase their income for their internet marketing business.

Benefits of using videos for internet marketing beginners

If you?re a beginner in internet marketing, the best way to make it in your industry is to keep informed. This market evolves fast, with changes in practices happening virtually by the day. It?s also a rather fickle industry, capable of focusing intense spotlight on an idea only to shift that spotlight on another idea in a matter of weeks.

With videos, you can access information immediately, implement it if it proves useful for your business or simply discard it if it?s not. Short films are also an excellent way to promote your products and services, particularly during the initial stages when you need to create a lot of buzz.

What videos to use for your internet marketing business

For beginners in this industry, there are numerous videos you can learn from online, most of which are being provided for free. If you don?t have prior experience in internet marketing before, try titles that offer you an introduction to the topic.

An example is Steve Nam?s ?Internet Marketing: Make Money Online for Beginners? or ?Newbies? Internet Marketing Guide?. These videos and similar like it offer you a glimpse of what the internet marketing industry is like, how it works and how to effectively generate income. Generally, this will not include details of the business but it should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect in the world of online marketing.

You might also want to take a look at video series, which include lectures that provide information about the industry as well as tutorials on income-generating models. These are more detailed and since each part of the series is short (most of these videos are less than 10 minutes in length), there?s plenty you can learn.

    AdSense videos

Google AdSense can be an important part of your internet marketing business so you might want to search for movies that offer training on how to use AdSense. AdSense doesn?t have to be complicated and in fact, Google has a nice step-by-step tutorial for wourld-be users but if you want information from insiders and experienced AdSense users, what they can tell you is a lot useful ? almost like a short-cut on the process.

    Search engine optimization

SEO is an important concern for internet marketing beginners. If you?re still trying to build buzz about your business, you need search engine rankings, which can only be made possible if you have an effective search engine optimization strategy. Look for movie tutorials on SEO online, which will train you on the basics and help you design and plan a website that can help attract the right traffic and build links.

    Traffic building

The topic of traffic building is often interrelated to search engine optimization, marketing, e-mail list building, and traffic targeting. Videos that teach you the right way to build traffic are essential to your business and will help build the foundation to a strong business strategy.

    Multiple streams of income

There are a lot of opportunities for beginners in internet marketing, particularly in income generation. Look for videos that offer tutorials on how to create multiple streams of income-generating businesses. You?ll appreciate this later when you wish to expand your market and maximize your money-earning potential.

DIY videos for internet marketing beginners

When it?s your time to create your own videos, you might want to learn a few tips from those who have the right experience. Short movies can cost a lot of money to create and if you have little idea on what you are doing, the end result may not be so useful. Learn as much as you can from videos designed for internet marketing beginners, such as ?Internet Video Publishing: A Beginner?s Guide?, which offers a tutorial on how to use films to publish your own lessons. You?ll find the training provided in these short tutorial movies very useful should you decide to produce your own short films in the future.

Tropical Storm Bolaven weakened as it moved north through the cooler waters of the Yellow Sea in the last day, which is good news for North Korea and southeastern China where it is making landfall today, Aug. 28.

On Aug. 27, NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission or TRMM satellite monitored the rainfall rates within Tropical Storm Bolaven. At the time TRMM passed over, Bolaven was still a typhoon. TRMM captured rainfall data at 0917 UTC (about 5:17 p.m. Korea local time/5:17 a.m. EDT) and at 12:33 UTC (8:33 p.m. Korea local time/8:33 a.m. EDT). Bolaven has been generating heavy rainfall and that has been falling over both South and North Korea. Data from TRMM's Microwave Imager (TMI) and Precipitation Radar (PR) instruments showed that numerous rain bands north of Bolaven's center were dropping precipitation at a rate greater than 75 mm/hr (~2.95 inches). That heavy rainfall is cause for concern of flooding as Bolaven makes landfall and moves inland over North Korea and southeastern China.

At 12:55 a.m. EDT (4:55 UTC/12:55 p.m. Korea local time) on Aug. 28, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite captured a high-resolution visible image of Tropical Storm Bolaven centered in the Yellow Sea. Its center of circulation was cloud-free and appeared very large on satellite imagery. Bolaven's cloud cover was extensive and blanketed North and South Korea, southeastern China and southern Japan.

Both the TRMM and the MODIS imagery were created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The data from both satellites is shared with the forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center who use it to make their forecasts.

On Aug. 28 at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT/5 p.m. local time, North Korea), Tropical Storm Bolaven had maximum sustained winds near 55 knots (63.2 mph/102 kmh). It was located about 115 nautical miles (132.3 miles/213 km) west of Seoul, South Korea near 38.1 North latitude and 124.9 East longitude. Bolaven was moving to the north-northeastward at 23 knots (26.4 mph/42.6 kmh) and generating very rough waters in the Yellow Sea, with wave heights to 34 feet (10.3 meters).

Forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) noted that multi-spectral satellite imagery is showing today, Aug. 28, that the low-level circulation center is expanding and deteriorating as stratocumulus clouds surround the system. Wind shear from the south-southeast has been pushing the bulk of clouds and showers to the north and northeast of the center of circulation, over North and South Korea.

The JTWC forecast calls for Bolaven to continue moving to the north-northeast into Northern Korea later on Aug. 28 and become extra-tropical over land in the next day.

B2B telemarketing Services for high end sales | Marketing Direct ...

    George Clay

Are your marketing dollars churning out sales leads that are poor quality and difficult to track?

?Stop the bleeding!?? EACH?sales lead I generate for you gets followed-up. EACH sales lead is tracked so you quantify and measure how well your campaign is working.?If?you aren?t measuring how well your ads are doing then you are not doing marketing at all but instead PR.

I work exclusively for sales organizations where?lead nurturing and relationship building?are key to closing each sale. Not one call telemarketing or call center work. Nothing like that. My appointment setting and lead management process are entirely different.Getting?your small business QUALITY new business appointments with higher conversion rates and more revenue per sales lead than is typically?achieved by direct mail,?e-mail marketing, or traditional?telemarketing?is what my service is all about.I make things happen by working the phones and making the calls.Call me a cold calling pro or over-the-phone-rainmaker or whatever you like.?Bottom line: I can open business opportunities for you that are new, fresh,??shape-able? ? free of baggage & history. That?s the beauty of using the?phone to create new business.

Your calls?are important?and making sure they?re done right is why I don?t outsource to third party?call centers.

Sure this limits the projects I take on.

But I?m here to give you service that stands out from the crowd.

I?m one of a successful minority who is good at doing what most sales people dread ??over-the-phone prospecting.

Yes! Cold calling is my bread and butter.

To make working with me pay out for YOU consider a SMALL trial project. You and I work together so the sales leads and appointments I generate for you convert into paying customers for YOUR business.

During this trial project some leads are upgraded?some downgraded. Yes,?it?s a process. But from cold lead through satisfied customer it brings you better qualified prospects with higher conversion rates than you can get with direct mail, email marketing or traditional telemarketing.

I develop your prospect list by building solid relationships with key prospects in the markets and the companies you want to reach.

Creating trust?with each prospect is my primary goal ? NOT making a sale. Your calls?are important?and making sure they?re done this way is?why I don?t outsource?to third party call centers.

I start the lead qualification process with introductory cold calls?that qualify each prospect to determine if your business is a good fit for what they need. It?s here the weak prospects are weeded out?and the better qualified prospects ?are engaged for careful and methodical follow-up calls. ?This is where the all important relationship building ?process begins.

With each call I capture key details?including:

    • Your prospect?s interest level in your goods or services.
    • Identify their needs?learn about existing suppliers? and how YOU can pre-empt the competition.
    • Ask the qualifying questions?to make certain your offer matches their needs.
    • Learn their ?hot buttons? ? what is it you can do for them that matters most.

In battered Aleppo, rebels dig in for war of attrition

Syrian rebels say they are digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, where what was being billed as the "mother of all battles" is now dragging on into a second month of bloody stalemate.

Aleppo is bearing the brunt of attacks by government warplanes, tanks and heavy artillery as the army battles to dislodge rebels who claim to control 60 percent of the battered northern metropolis.

"We don't have enough weapons, they (the Syrian army) don't have enough men," said Abu Haidar, a rebel fighter in Saif al-Dawla, a district in the city's southwestern belt where much of the fighting is concentrated.

At least 200,000 people have fled the city since late July when the increasingly bloody conflict spread to Aleppo, a once thriving manufacturing and commercial hub where war has now left a trail of destruction, with bombed out buildings and shuttered shops.

"It is a long war. Each party wants to settle the score, but it is a war of attrition that will drag on, with bombardments and fighting every day," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a watchdog that has a network of sources on the ground.

Some rebel commanders say they are aware that even if the Free Syrian Army -- a motley collection of armed opposition groups -- seizes full control on the ground, they will remained besieged from the air by the military's far superior firepower.

"Bashar al-Assad is like a wounded animal now, so I don't expect him and his army to follow a logic," Abu Mohamed, who leads a small katiba (brigade) near the Citadel in old Aleppo, said of the embattled Syrian president..

"I sometimes think he wants us to take the ground and then surround the city and starve us. He can then wait, try to cut us off and hope that we make mistakes, that civilians turn against us," he told AFP.

Abu Mohammed defected from the army three years ago and found political asylum in Belgium before crossing back into Syria via Turkey more than a year ago when the revolution started.

A top FSA commander in Aleppo, Abdel Jabba al-Okaidi, told AFP on Tuesday that the rebels now controlled more than 60 percent of the city, but this was rejected as "completely false" by a security source in Damascus.

And on Thursday, the army said it had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods in the heart of the predominantly Sunni Muslim city, whose fate is seen as crucial to the outcome of the war, in part because of its strategic location near Turkey.

The Damascus security source said rebel ranks were swelling in terms of men but that the opposition fighters were lacking in arms as government air strikes had destroyed many weapons caches.

"The army is trying to create security zones," the source said, by carving up neighbourhoods using troops and tanks to control the main streets and then "cleansing" each area of rebels.

"It's a long process," he said.

Amnesty International said this week that civilians were facing "horrific" violence in Aleppo and indiscriminate attacks by regime troops, reporting scores of civilians killed or wounded in their homes or while queuing for bread.

Assad's men now control the Citadel, an ancient fortress in the heart of the Old City, but rebel fighters are surrounding the area and often take pot-shots at the troops.

Not far away, in the Qastal Harami alleyways of the Old City, the Katiba Khuttab brigade of fighters were manning a sniper post set up behind a stack of sandbags just outside a bookshop.

The brigade commander, Khuttab, paced over cobblestones that have been covered with stickers featuring Assad's face, so his fighters can trample on their enemy.

"The people in this area have mostly left, they are poor, so they don't provide us with help as such, in fact we try to give those who are left behind help. But they all support us," he told AFP.

Some rebels said the reason Assad's forces do not launch a wider ground assault to reconquer Aleppo and use their greater firepower to break the back of the rebellion could be linked to its military failure in the town of Aazaz, which lies north of Aleppo near the Turkish border.

Government forces stormed Aazaz in February but the FSA seized control at the end of July after five months of fierce fighting.

"Assad's army had prepared a large ground offensive but when the time came to fight, the soldiers were divided and fought among themselves," said Abdullah, a rebel who defected from the army a year ago.

"Assad now knows he cannot trust his own men, if he wants to send troops into the field. Aazaz was on a relatively small scale, but if he deploys 20,000 men for an assault on Aleppo and the same kind of thing happens, imagine the consequences.

"It would be the end of his credibility, the entire army would defect, the regime would collapse.

"Assad cannot afford that risk, so he's happy to use just tanks, Iranian snipers and jets flown by Russian pilots," Abdullah charged.

    E Commerce ? a viable commerce channel |

Advent of computers and collaborative Internet technologies has changed the ways we do business (also the ways we live). Beyond desktop and mainframe computing, Internet has emerges as a huge market where anyone can sell and buy. Are businesses selling and buying online in Pakistan? My answer is not really. We are only starting to get there, very slowly.

As per the common definition, ?ecommerce (electronic commerce) means selling and buying of services and goods over the electronic medium, like Internet and mobile phones?. E-commerce, in theory, is not only a big convenience but also can be a boost to otherwise sluggish economy. From consumers? point of view, shopping online saves time as well as money. Consumers can see more, compare and find more choices and the best deals with a few mouse clicks while sitting home. That is not possible for those who go and shop on ground. No one can visit each store to find what they are offering and how? Moreover, it is a big hassle going to shop in any of the crowded shopping centers (like Anarkail and Liberty Lahore or Tariq Road, Karachi) with no dedicated parking spaces. Ecommerce makes it easier for consumers to make interactive purchases online. A consumer uses a credit card and make a number of purchases online that will only drives the retail (or virtual) outlets, but also provides indirect business to the delivery channel, packaging companies and other smaller businesses which may be in the middle of the transaction before the delivery is actually made.

From the business standpoint, companies can certainly use analytical tools and have more customized offerings to create not only value addition to the good and services they offer, but also create a stronger and more loyal customers? base. I am not talking about Amazon or eBay here. I know of at least two local businesses, one based in Chitral and another in Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka ? a small village near Okara ? that are totally operating online and reaching out to their customers all over the world. There must be more.

That is a theory. In local context, empirical observations paint rather dismal picture. In reality, not many businesses in Pakistan are ecommerce. Many commercial concerns still do not have even a website or any other forms of online presence what to talk of doing business in the cyber world. Physical stores are still trusted ways to reach out to consumers.

Pakistan has a number of barriers to electronic commerce. The biggest challenge is the lack to trust among users to enable them part with money online and place orders for making purchases. This needs a complete attitude change for the users to shift from physically visiting stores for shopping (and window-shopping) to making purchases on a website. Many Pakistanis are using the Internet to communicate and share information, their likes, and dislikes with their friends but there has to be a cultural change to make them use credit cards and click ?buy.?

Online financial transactions (to and from Pakistan) are tedious, slow and complicated. Those who are in telecommuting or outsourcing and deals with clients in foreign markets can send the work via email, FTP or a couriers, but the payments are still a hassle with many people depending on wire transfers ? relatively expensive procedure. Non-availability of PayPal in Pakistan also adds to the problem. In early 2000, the government started some ecommerce initiatives and the banks were urged to lead the way forward. That did not happen.

Pakistan is a large market where the Internet is available to a very small percentage of the population mostly restricted to the urban areas or some suburbs. Most of the active users of the Internet are young students with not much of a purchasing power. Inadequate infrastructures, insufficient telephone lines, frequent power failures and lack of tech savvy culture and know how are some other factors hindering users to adapt to online shopping. I spoke to different users and non said they shop online as a routine but they all argued that online shopping has a bright future in Pakistan. What should be done?

A lot needs to be done if we have to take advantages of the ecommerce boom. Initially ecommerce was just about building a website and then driving traffic to it. This is not enough anymore. Yes, the importance of a functional website cannot be understated. That is what helps users to make their first impression about business and if the other related processes are good then the users are likely to return to repeat their good experience. The businesses not only have to have functional and users? friendly websites but also need to advertise extensively about products and services they are offering and how. Consumers need to know about the best place to shop and how credible they are. That makes online marketing, especially international search, within the overall marketing budget as an imperative. As much as the consumer numbers are increasing, it is not worth anything to online businesses if they appear anywhere at the backend of search engine results. Increasing credibility for any online business only comes with increasing visibility.

Government needs to pursue initiatives that were started long time ago and support them legally making clear rules on how to tax e-commerce or determine ?electronic residence? in Pakistan. Banks can play a major role in encouraging potential buyers and sellers by certifying websites offering online shopping. This will also encourage an overall constructive use of internet and will accelerate banks revenues as well.

But it is the responsibility of corporate sector to create awareness and literally show people how to use their credit cards and purchase online safely and from where. Only this will help people to adjust to the phenomenon of online shopping. Unless business are able to accelerate rate of change in consumers? behavior, their ?shopping carts? may remain empty.

Isaac to hit Haiti overnight; Florida residents told to prepare now ...

Those considered most vulnerable were urged to move into an evacuation camp housed in a school building, but others with nowhere else to go were digging trenches to avoid the water. Haiti's population remains especially vulnerable due to the country's sprawling shanty towns. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

By NBC News and wire reports

Updated at 11 p.m. ET:?Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened on Friday as its lashing rains took aim at flood-prone Haiti, but it was not expected to become a hurricane until it barreled into the Gulf of Mexico early next week.?

On its current path, forecasters said Isaac would hit Cuba and the southern tip of Florida before making landfall anywhere from the Florida Panhandle in the northwestern part of the state to Alabama and as far west as New Orleans.

Forecasters put the entire coast of south Florida under tropical storm watch as of 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) on Friday.

But the biggest immediate concern was heavily deforested Haiti, where the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the full force of the storm was expected to be felt later Friday. ?

Isaac could pass near Florida's Gulf Coast early Monday just as the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start in Tampa.?

Winds at tropical storm strength extend 185 miles out from Isaac's center, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory, making it a very wide storm.

On exiting Haiti, Isaac's center should cross Cuba on Saturday, and then pass south of the Florida Keys before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane overnight Tuesday somewhere between New Orleans and Tallahassee, NBC meteorologist Al Roker said Friday on TODAY. Warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico will be "energy for the storm" as it makes its way across the gulf, he added.

    In related developments Friday:

    • The U.S. embassy in Haiti sent an e-mail to American citizens in the country warning that flights into and out of Port-au-Prince have been suspended due to Isaac.
    • Oil and gas producers in the Gulf of Mexico started preparing as Isaac's track looked to skirt the heart of the U.S. offshore energy producing zone. BP?said it would shut down its giant Thunder Horse platform, the world's largest. Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron and Apache Corp. said they would evacuate some workers from their Gulf platforms with no production impacts. Other offshore drillers were likely to shut production in coming days as the storm approaches.
    • The U.S. military moved 22 F-16s from?Homestead Air Reserve Base in Florida to Fort Worth, Texas. Three F-15s from the base are on alert to move to Jacksonville if necessary.

How do you salvage vacation plans when a hurricane strikes? NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

South Florida could see a few twisters and heavy rain -- some 5-10 inches Sunday and into Monday, weather.com experts said in an online chat with readers Friday.

Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005 and officials are concerned that residents there have become complacent.

Aid workers prep Haiti's tent city residents for Isaac's onlsaught

"I think it's a challenge of getting people to understand their risk and make sure they?ve got a plan," said Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

With more than 19 million people living across the Sunshine State, Fugate wants every Florida resident to have enough supplies to last 72 hours and to know when to evacuate.

"I think the most dangerous thing is when people keep waiting to see what the next forecast is even if they?re in an evacuation zone. They say, 'Oh, it?s just a Category 1 storm or a minimum hurricane.' We?ve seen significant impacts from tropical storm force winds and rain," Fugate added.

In the Florida Keys, where there are few routes available for evacuation -- U.S. 1, Key West International Airport, and the Florida Keys Marathon Airport -- Mayor Craig Cates said his biggest concern was the storm's timing. Cates said he would need at least 36 hours to begin evacuations of tourists and residents.

"If it (Isaac) comes straight on to Key West, we?re worried about the damage that could happen in Key West. If it goes further up the Keys, it could damage power lines and we could get affected," Cates said. "Even if it hits further up the state, we have got to be prepared with our generators and our supplies. Being on an island, we understand that."

Forecasters with The Weather Channel think the evacuation decisions could come quickly. It is anticipated that watches will be issued for South Florida and the Keys by Friday night. In the event of an evacuation, Cates told The Weather Channel that tourists would leave first, followed by special needs citizens.?

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said?state officials are working with convention organizers, who will ultimately make the call on a delay or cancellation of the event.

State officials?announced Thursday that they will wait to make decisions about moving supplies until after Isaac passes Cuba. FEMA has already placed food and generators in Jacksonville. ?

Isaac is forecast to remain a tropical storm after crossing the Dominican Republic and Haiti and then passing over Cuba into the Florida Straits.

Tampa officials have not ruled out the possibility of postponing the GOP Convention if the storm poses a public safety risk. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

The National Hurricane Center?warned it was "important not to focus on the exact track because of forecast uncertainties and the fact that Isaac has a large area of tropical storm force winds."

Isaac was expected to dump between 8 and 12 inches of rain over parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and up to 20 inches in a few areas. That poses a significant threat to Haiti, which is highly prone to flooding and mudslides because of its near-total deforestation.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, still has about 350,000 people living in tents or makeshift shelters more than 2-1/2 years after a devastating earthquake that took more than a quarter of a million lives.

With nearly 400,000 people still living in evacuation tents, a hurricane or even a tropical storm could lead to deaths and more damage to the already fragile country. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Red Cross workers toured crowded tent camps of Haitians left homeless by the 2010 quake to warn about Isaac.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic evacuated people living on the banks of rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides in preparation for the approach of Isaac, whose effects were beginning to be felt with showers in the south of the country.

    2013 Ram 1500 Test Drive

    On Sale Date: October 2012

    Price: Starts at $24,580

Competitors: Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Nissan Titan, Toyota Tundra

    Powertrains: 3.6-liter V-6, 305 hp, 296 lb-ft; 4.7-liter V-8, 310 hp, 330 lb-ft; 5.7-liter V-8, 395 hp, 407 lb-ft; six-speed auto, eight-speed auto, RWD or 4WD.

EPA Fuel Economy (city/hwy): 14?18/19?25 (est.)

What?s New: Ram pickups left the Dodge garage in 2010 to become a separate brand, and the 2013 model represents the first major makeover of the bread-and-butter half-tonner. Beneath the skin, engineers redesigned and lightened the frame and gave the 1500 a new suspension. The redesigned skin doesn?t look vastly different, but the design team claims to have created unmathed aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.36. A new, more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 replaces the previous 3.7-liter as the standard engine, and a new eight-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous four-speed. The combination adds up to improvements in both performance and fuel economy.

Tech Tidbit: A subtle engineering element in the new eight-speed automatic is a thermal management system designed to raise transmission oil temperature quickly. When the engine reaches operating temps, coolant circulates through a heat exchanger to warm the trans oil, reducing its viscosity rapidly and improving fuel economy.

Driving Character: Like its competitors, the Ram is a big vehicle, and it feels big. Responses range from deliberate to slightly ponderous, and turning circles range up to 45 feet?not very handy in parking lots. The new V-6 and automatic transmission are smooth and distinctly more potent than their predecessors?Chrysler claims 0-to-60 mph in 7.5 seconds?and the Ram willingly tows up to 6500 pounds. On-road or off, ride quality is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle thanks to the new air suspension. Remarkable also applies to interior noise levels?the cabin is quiet at all speeds, on all surfaces.

Favorite Detail: The optional storage bins built into the sides of the current truck?s cargo bed (Ram Boxes) are manually lockable. But securing those three locks can be a nuisance, especially when the weather turns nasty. This inconvenience makes them a common target for thieves. The new Ram offers a power function for those three locks, integrating their operation with the power door locks. One click on the key fob secures everything.

Driver?s Grievance: The new eight-speed automatic is controlled by a dashboard rotary knob. It?s... adequate, but we?re not sure how this feature will resonate with hardcore truckers. In step with the industry, the Ram is equipped with a new electric rack-and-pinion power steering system, a trend driven by fuel economy. Although the system delivers some feedback and on-center feel in top-of-the-line models, it felt vague in the more basic version.

The Bottom Line: Besides all-new interiors and evolutionary styling?still boldly unmistakable?the new Ram stands out for four key distinctions: its new standard V-6; its new eight-speed automatic transmission; its stop/start technology; and its air-spring suspension. The combination of much improved V-6 power and efficiency, plus an all-but-seamless stop/start function, gives the Ram best-in-class EPA fuel economy: 18 mpg city/25 highway. The new V-6 overlaps the optional 4.7-liter V-8 in terms of power, and for serious punch, the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 continues to be one of the top dogs in the half-ton pickup pack.

The Ram has been the perennial third-place player in the full-size pickup derby, but this renewal could propel it closer to the front of the field.

Cooking Meat Like This Ups Risk of Prostate Cancer

Eating Steak Like We have uncovered some health advice regarding red meat, courtesy of cancer experts in California. If you take a steak, for instance, and pan fry it at high temperatures, you may be increasing your risk of advanced prostate cancer by 40%. If you eat the steak, of course.

It?s another negative health breakthrough for red meat,?which health experts have long suggested we eat in?moderation. Older studies have shown a subtle link?between eating lots of red meat and your prostate cancer?risk. But what of cooking methods?

PLUS: Choosing the Best Cooking Oils

Past studies have identified a cancer risk as a result of?cooking meats at high temperatures. In the new study, data?from about 2,000 men was looked at, with people filling?out a questionnaire about how much poultry and red meat?they ate. Color photographs illustrated how ?done? the?meat was, and was combined with information on how it?was cooked.

The takeaway fact: men eating over 1.5 weekly servings of?red meat, fried on a pan, face an average elevation in?advanced prostate cancer risk of 30%. That risk rose to?40% when men ate over 2.5 servings every week.

Back to the steak for a moment ? in fact, hamburger had a?far higher link than other forms of red meat, which doesn?t?bode well for a nation obsessed with the burger. The?researchers said in a press release that there are different?levels of carcinogens in hamburger, and they can get to?higher temperatures more quickly than steak can.

How about baked poultry? For this, researchers identified a?lower risk for advanced prostate cancer. But if you switch?to pan-fried chicken, the risk goes up. In the study, pan?frying any meat led to a higher prostate cancer risk,?suggesting that it is the most dangerous method of cooking.

Where is this risk coming from? Researchers believe it is?the HCAs (heterocyclic amines) that are formed during the?cooking process. HCAs are carcinogens that can damage?your DNA ? the precise sequence of events that can trigger?a tumor. HCAs are formed when sugars and amino acids?are cooked at a high heat for a long time. There are other?carcinogens, too, like PAHs (polycyclic aromatic?hydrocarbons), which can come about when meat is grilled?or smoked. If a barbecue?s fire catches a drip from the meat,?the smoke that rises back up can leave PAHs on your?burger or spare rib. Heavy evidence also exists for a link?between HCAs and PAHs and cancer risk.

It?s all about understanding cancer risk. If you eat meat,?consider alternative cooking methods to pan frying. And?for the best approach, cut down your weekly exposure to?meat.
