California's Prime Healthcare Services to buy two Kansas hospitals

Staff Wichita Business Journal

A large California hospital company, Prime Healthcare Services, is buying two struggling hospitals in Kansas, Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth.

The Kansas City Star reports the hospitals' current owner is SCL Health Systems, which was founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth.

Both facilities have been operating at a loss. Prime Healthcare says it will make investments to stabilize the hospitals financially, attempt to maintain all employees and keep both facilities' acute care and emergency services for at least five years.
